Vassal - help a newbie out

Is anyone interested in doing a Vassal game with me? I've downloaded everything and messed around with it, but would like to get some experience before I join anything formal.

If the darned company gets my internet connection working some day I can run demo or two(or three, or four :D) on how to play with vassal.

I'll let you know if that happens and there still needs to be need for it.

anyone want help stick me on MSN messenger : steve2305@hotmail.co.uk and i will run through games with you when i have the time. i am UK based if you want to know what timezone i am in.

Can someone explain what the Vassal's are. I haven't downloaded anything yet just a little curious as to how it all works, to say the least! :)

I managed to get Vassal installed and got the ACTA v7.1 mod downloaded. I'm kinda lost after that point. I noticed theres a server status button but when I actually start the ACTA mod, there seems to be no way to join a paticular server.

So am I doing anything wrong? Does the ACTA server start automatically when I start the mod and theres just no else there besides me?

Generally speaking you will probably not actually find any servers up unless youve arranged a game on the forums or something as you create your own server when you make a game. And it only shows the servers for the mod your using so if noone else is online you wont see any :P

when you start vassal up on the ACTA mod and click connect to server you will basically be in the ACTA main room. from there you create rooms and play games in them. sometimes find me hanging around on the server seeing if anyone wants a game.

what would be great would be if we could get a nice community up and running such that there were people online most of the time and you could just log on for a game :)

aye sounds right, if anyone else logs on you should see their name in the main room too then you can create aother room to go into and play your game (its a little more complicated setting up a game for both to be synchronised into but is easy enough once you know how, probably best to play someone who can walk you through it for your first game though :))

Id also suggest if you havent already playing a bunch of games offline even if you just do little skirmishes against yourself to get used to using the movement tools and dice etc. Try to run both sides relying on what data you can see on the vassal table only and not paper notes etc to get used to what data you need to put on your ships damage tracks and notes for your oppnent :)

When all's said and doen though just jump in at the deepend and learn to swim on the way down ;)
