Cosmic Mongoose
So I rolled up an old CT character, Vikrihar the Vargr Corsair engineer, in MgT2e to play with some idea for him and I ended up rolling a Corsair for his mustering out benefit. So l looked around and couldn't find an official or unofficial design I liked.
I started out making the Corsair I really wanted. At TL14 it's a scouting and raiding powerhouse for a 400 ton vessel. It has good range, with Jump-2 drives and enough internal fuel to make 2 full jumps if you're using the fuel bladder in the cargo hold, Maneuver 4 drives to catch most anything non-military with in its range, and 100 tons of cargo space to haul off lots of loot. It has external fittings allowing it to carry 400 tons of fuel and cargo or tow a 400 ship and jump with it, albeit at jump 1 instead of 2. It has terrific sensors and a big computer running advanced software. Alas it was nearly 200MCr and really more of a patrol corvette than an actual Corsair. I did notice one error, I forgot to remove the extra ton of fuel from when I was planning on having a parasite craft. So just call it 8 weeks of operation instead of 4 for the power plant fuel supply.
So I went back to the drawing board. TL12 design, much less impressive sensor suite and computer but nearly the same jump, maneuver and cargo fittings. It loses the big damage particle barbette and a little armor but it's less than 60% the cost at only 112MCr and still nearly as capable.
Ok, great, but Vic is from Misery, a TL9 world with a B starport. They would have to import the jump drive but what about a Corsair that they could build there? Or basically anywhere in the Extents? So I present the TL9 Faeng (Small Fang), I couldn't find the Vargr word for little or small and faeng is apparently tooth and not Fang, but it works for now. The Faeng class is a very basic raider. It relies on a 4G reaction drive with 1 hour of fuel for actually chasing down merchants and the pulse lasers are not as reliable or accurate as those on the higher tech vessels but the ship still has good range and the jump-1, maneuver-1 engines are rated to handle 800 tons so the ship can still haul away good-sized prizes or load up on external cargo to carry it away. It's 16MCr cheaper than the TL12 version and being low tech it is serviceable nearly anywhere and should be able to fill in alot of different roles as the hulls get older and they get bought up and customized by enterprising Vargr.
Please let me know what you think and if you have any suggestions I'd love to hear them.
EDIT: to add
For the TL 14 Rraz Patrol Corvette, going to a Reinforced Hull and adding Armored Bulkheads to everything but the fuel tanks takes up 10 tons of cargo space and adds about 30MCr in cost but it improves survivability and as it is a military vessel the costs seem worthwhile.
