Utility To Decode A UPP?

sshinn

Banded Mongoose
Does anyone know of a tool to decode a UPP such as E5457AF-6? I know how to do it manually, but if there was something out there already to translate the code into English I’d like to use it.

Otherwise I guess I’ll write a spreadsheet macro to do this.

Thanks in advance. In case you're wondering, I'm going to use some random generators to give me a bunch of UPP codes, but I want to have them translated into user-friendly descriptions.

see "Trade Code Deriver (MgT) (.Net).zip" under

http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/MGT-Aids/files/*_MONGOOSE TRAVELLER specific/*AIDS-GM/

All it does is make the trade code from the UWP unfortunately.

You can also PM me and I'll be happy to email it to you.

Additionally, there is an app that does exactly what you're asking about but I can't find it any more. Does anyone know where it's hosted at? See the screen shot. There's no real identifying info in it. It actually does the full decode of a pasted UWP into plain language. I actually have the .swf file for this that can be run in a browser but just wanted to put the actual link up for it if it's still out there somewhere. PM me your email and I'll send it along.

I have a simple python program that does what you want. If you're interested, drop me a line.
It uses a bunch of CSV files to map digits to descriptions. Even if you don't want the python code, you might still find those useful.

I have a similar program in javascript that runs in a dorky little "TravReferee Helper" page I made that is a bit more visually appealing.

I would love a Decoder APP especially if I could print out the results to use as Player handouts. I think it would improve gameplay greatly. Can say it is a ship computer printout from library data or scanners or whatever.

The reason you can't easily find commercial software to help the Traveller GM with such issues is that (according to various forums) Marc Miller will not license commercial Traveller computer programs.

So, we're on our own to develop then for nonprofit use. The following web pages may be of some benefit:

http://www.spacecorsair.com/uppdecoder.html

It's also reasonably easy to set up a database with your sector data and create a report form to display or print a UPP report. I have used both Bento and FileMaker Pro to do so; if you don't want to purchase a commercial project, try the fabulous LibreOffice:

https://www.libreoffice.org/

It includes a database, and it's free.

One of my blog posts next week will include instructions on how to use Microsoft Excel to import .sec files into a database. Good luck!

Can someone explain the UWP tech levels for me. Is it a straight 1-9,A,B,C,D,E,F with F=15? The core rule book tells you what to roll to get one, but doesn't explicitly relate it the UWP anywhere I can find.

Specifically would like to know if Pashus suits my needs for a TL-15 system.

*Edit* whoops, F=15, which is odd as Pashus is a tech level G. world. Am I missing something from previous versions or something?

You missed "F" for 15, making "G" 16, but otherwise yes.

Odd.

See edit above.

I'm looking at pg 179, and 4 in the main rule book.

Is travellermap updated for Mongoose? Does it need to be. I played CT or was it megatraveller (I can't quite remember), but only a little and it was some 20 years ago.
