Unarmed combatant

Ive been looking through the rules trying to find a way to raise the base unarmed damage. Is there an item, source material that can point me in the right direction. A 1d3 punch really doesnt do much for a kung fu guru type.

Any help is appreciated

I don´t have the MRQ2 rules yet, but there are good ways to do what you want.

Do it the RQ3 Land of Ninja way (i write this without the box in front of me, so i might get it wrong):

Roll under Fist and you get a damage of 1D3.
Roll under Fist AND the Martial Arts skill and you get double damage AKA 2D3.
Roll under Fist and Martial Arts AND use a Ki (magic) Point and the damage you do is at maximum AKA (2D3 rolled 3 =) 6.

If you have a damage modifier you are in the league i think you are searching for... ;-)

I don´t know if something like this is possible with MRQ2, but i assume it is... somehow.

Why are you worried about damage? You can use the Change Range CM to close into touch range (possibly rendering the foe's weapon incapable of parrying, then use the Stun Location, Disarm, Trip, Take Weapon etc, etc. If the Martial Artist has the edge in skill, then he has lots of CMs to mess the opponent up. :)

If you just want to gratuitously inflict GBH, then design the PC to have a Damage Bonus, use STR boosting magic, the Bestial Enhancement spell, True (Fist), or have a Damage Bonus boosting spirit bound into a chest tattoo (Strength of the Dragon!). If that isn't good enough for you, wear a pair of cestus or knuckle dusters, maybe enchanted ones, do some Characteristic training, be taught a Heroic Ability like Awesome Smash, or even go on a unarmed combat HeroQuest and be granted fists which do a base 1D6 or more damage. Not enough? Perhaps you'd like to play a troll! :D

...If after all these suggestions you are still disappointed, face the reality that unarmed damage really doesn't compare to using a proper weapon; and taking on an armoured opponent with bare hands is asking for trouble unless you'd like to start wrestling. ;)

Hi Athelys

You could also look at doing up additional Combat Maneouvres (CMs) for unarmed combat.

As Pete points out, the current CMs can be used and can be quite tactical if you look at them and you could also add your own.

In fact, you could probably design generic Martial Arts type CMs, throws, locks, strangles, breaking, etc and use them for any milieu and type of martial art by giving them applicable sounding names.

http://www.historyofmacedonia.org/AncientMacedonia/diodorus.html
[3] The Macedonians and Alexander backed Coragus because he was one of them while the Greeks favored Dioxippus. 17.100.4.

[4] Then the Macedonian (Coragus) poised his long lance and charged, but the Greek (Dioxippus), when he came within reach, struck the spear with his club and shuttered it. After these two defeats, Coragus was reduced to continuing the battle with sword, but as he reached for it, the other leaped upon him and seized his swordhand with his left, while with his right hand the Greek upset the Macedonian’s balance and made him lose his footing. 17.100.6-7

Without even developing additional CMs, you could probably achieve some of the effects that Diodorus say Dioxippus achieved against Coragus.

The existing CMs and any additional ones you create would seem to be compatible with martial arts and ki rolls (but you'd probably want to modify any CMs and some other results). What would you get if you got differing levels of success, say success with fist, success with martial arts and critical with ki or some configuration of that, what would martial art CMs be based on?

Just some thoughts.

In addition to Mongoose Pete's suggestions, don't forget any Damage Modifier attribute a character has gained from his/her characteristics.

Gods help the poor b*****d who rolls a fumble at the same time an attacker rolls a critical success. That can change a well-designed ambush into something like a fight between one of the Three Stooges and a very, very angry Bruce Lee.
