Typo in RQ Vikings

I'm sure this has brought up already but just in case it hasn't...on p.34 the heading Adventureres should be Adventurers and the same on the contents page.

So with this coming out soon and me wanting to pre-order it...was there time to give the book a final editing pass before its release? It's just typos and errata drive me insane and I notice the preview still has 'adventureres'.

I expect Mongoose products to be badly edited, unfortunately. I really do believe they are trying to publish too many books each month and can't keep up.

Yeah. It's a real shame. So many books that I really want but after all the problems of a couple of years ago I decided never to pre-order a Mongoose book...I'd rather wait for some reviews to see if the editing was okay. If not...then I'd rather wait for the 2nd printing where all the errata and typos are fixed.

They do seem to have improved a bit...especially the layout...but then Lankhmar Unleashed, Necromantic Arts and Cults of Glorantha all seem to have been poorly edited.

I was so excited about Vikings that I was going to make an exception...but the rather obvious typo and the lack of response as to whether it has been fixed doesn't bode well and I think I'll just hold off.

I'll probably get it as a PDF anyway; much cheaper that way, and PDFs generally get updated with each printing.

Edit: Incidentally, is there a more concrete release date than "September"? After all, it is already September and has been for twelve days now...

I was so excited about Vikings that I was going to make an exception...but the rather obvious typo and the lack of response as to whether it has been fixed doesn't bode well and I think I'll just hold off.

I am rather irritated myself, since it wasn't my spelling mistake... But as I have learned these things do happen, no matter how much you strive for perfection.

I haven't received my author's copy yet, but when I do I'll post on the forum.

Well, frustratingly I still don't have my copy of the book, but Loz has received his. Unfortunately it appears the spelling mistake is still in there. My apologies on behalf of the company that it wasn't fixed in time.

However, before you decide to forswear ever purchasing the book for this minor glitch, perhaps you'd take a moment to read a couple of things Loz sent to me privately (I hope he forgives this impertinence). The first is when he had a look at the raw text files back in July.

Now had chance to look through Vikings and just want to say... Bloody marvellous.

It excels the old Glorantha set because it truly evokes the culture, history and mythology which, good as the RQ3 effort was, left a lot to assumption. I love this book. Really love it.

This second quote refers to the printed book itself, dated today.

I got 'Vikings' the other day and it looks fabulous; really great. Superb job. I think its the most handsome book we've done.

Now, I'm always a bit dubious when someone comes out of the blue with gushing compliments like these... I immediately wonder what they're after! But I have a lot of faith in Loz because he's always the first to give me a hard critique if he thinks I deserve it.

So perhaps you'll forgive two spelling mistakes and take a gamble. My fellow author seems to think it would be worthwhile.

I'll go on record and say it to the world.

'Vikings' is awesome.

Those of you who know Pete's work with 'Rome' from Alephtar (an Ennie Award Winner too) will be familiar with his attention to detail and also his in-depth knowledge of the subject matter. Those who aren't are in for a treat.
'Vikings' is in the same mould. It has everything you need to know, and more, about the people, their world, their myths, gods and magic. Its concise, detailed and eminently playable. Its the best historical book we've done and, with its gorgeous blue leather cover and neat, clean layout, the most handsome too. It looks, feels and reads elegant. It screams 'play me!'

The Adventurerers (sic) typo is unfortunate, very much so, but please don't let this deter you from buying this book.

As Viking spelling was fairly non existant Im sure I can live with such a minor typo!

Well, it's hardly a major mistake, and it's good that you are honest about it.

Pete has a lot of respect now for his historical work, and Vikings is certainly a major supplement for the RuneQuest game - now we can play Beowolf!

I hope that we see lots of these - with Ancient Greece being my next request.

I can live with a typo or two...it's just with Mongoose's track record I thought the typo would be symptomatic of further errors. I'm glad this isn't the case as this is, by far, the RQII book I've been most excited about.

A few more copy readers in between author and printer would mean also weeks or even months more time in between the publication of a book and the next.

If a typo in a book means that we get MORE GREAT BOOKS, then i can live with a few typos, as long as the typos are not major ones.

I am more worried about the quality of maps in Mongoose books, than a few typos, which are obviously typos, and do not change the meaning how a paragraph should be read.

Well, on the bright side, when Vikings wins an Ennie, and is in its third or fourth print run with all typos amended and gold leaf text everyone will be jealous of those with mint first edition copies that include the famous "adventurererersrs" (of whatever) typo!

Of course, Pete, we're going to expect of lot of your next book :wink:

I really don't give a crap about typos, It's the content of the book that matters and I'm really interested about Vikings. Any word if there will be an Ancient Rome book (maybe an MRQ specific conversion the Alepthar one)?

Just use the BRP Rome book. Seriously, there is only one chapter (Characters) where it makes any difference whatsoever, and the vast bulk of the book is systemless info. Pete Nash wrote that too, incidentally, and it was ominated for awards. I do think there is an argument that somebody needs to provide a definitive conversion document between BRP and RQII now, though.

In order, my hope for the RQII historicals would be:

Vikings (of course)
Ancient Greece (Homer, etc)
Feudal Japan (Samurai and Ninjas)
Pirates of the Carribbean - around 17th century or maybe Elizabethan era.
War of the Roses (15th Century England)
Napoleonic Europe
Rennaissance Italy - including Dante's Hell.
The Wild West.
Imperial Rome - to expand on the work already done from the Roman Republic (and noting that CoC already has Cthulhu Invuctus).
Aztecs
India
Polenesian (Maori migration accross the Pacific in canoes!)
Imperial China (again noting that there is already a BRP book coming out soon).

I'm not really keen on ding periods later than this, because I think Traveller does modern warfare better (so I'd like to see WW2 and onwards done with Traveller rules).

Personally, I'd like to see more Dark Age Europe and Pre-Roman Celtic Europe books. I would especially like to see Pre-Roman Invasion Britain and Post-Roman Invasion Britain books.
