Two stupid questions

Just got Cults of Glorantha and while I haven't thoroughly read them yet I did find a couple of things puzzling:

1) If a cut description does not include an entry for Runelord/Priest does this mean the position is absent? Given the nature of the cults involved I'm guess yes -- I find the concept of, say, Zorak Zoran having dedicated priests, well odd is not the word.

2) In the description of Intellect Spirits there is reference to free INT. I recall ihis was a concept in the third edition but have not found any other reference to it in the new one. Query?

Thanks -- Ned

Yes to the first one, not all cults have Runelords or Rune Priests.

The companion does talk about free INT. It basically means as a sorcerer, you can only have as many spells as you have INT points. Each spell you memorize, counts to your INT.

Um, not what I meant. Free INT was how much INT you had left after your spells, and this is clearly what was meant in the description of Intellect Spirits. If I recall correctly free INT governed how much you could manipulate spells.

RQ1/2 had not just Lords and Priests, but also a LOrd/Priest, that had many of the advantages of both. Some of the warrior cults, such as Stormbull, and Zorak Zoran have this type without bothering with regular Lords or Priests.

So a Storm Khan, or a Deathlord are each a big ball of nastyness. Or goodness for us trolls!

You are correct - some cults do not have the position.

Cults 1&2 unfortunately have many bits of RQ3 rules referenced. When the Manuscript was written the author did not have the final MRQ rules available and the editing process did not remove all of these RQ3 'relics'.

There should be some errata forthcoming.

In RQ 1/2 many cults had both Runelords and Runepriest . In RQ3 many Cults lost their Runelords.
Personally I still allow most cults to have Runelords , its that in many cases the position will often be vacant for years and/or be no interest to players. In my view a Runelords are people both highly devoted to the cult and highly skilled in those areas the cult values. for example a Runelord of an agricultural deity might have Plant and animal lore , drive plow , first aid(animal ) and other such skills but have not wield a weapon in years. Great to have around the village but not some one you take to fight Broos.
But the above is my own ruling which came about because of an Argan Agar Runelord. which existed in RQ1/2 but then seemed to disapear in RQ3
