I was picturing a new form of computer electronic warfare.
For example a new form of computer is developed in France.
A member of the group that's testing it contacts a member of the CIA to see if they're interested and as a test they hack a Finnish Nuclear Reactor Plant to send it critical.
The attempt is narrowly thwarted but is successful enough that the contact has the group killed and secures the invention unknowingly missing the inventor whose identity remains undiscovered in their haste to secure the Alpha Source device.
The device gives them unparalleled control over any computer and electronic device and communication but for one deterrent, the one survivor who remains at large sends the US Govt a message warning them of the perils of the device asking for its return and the dismantling of any equipment reverse engineered from the device.
They of course ignore the warning and then every nuclear weapon on the planet starts counting down, every attempt to locate the suspected hacker fails, they can't defuse all of the weapons and as a last resort the remainder are launched causing the great silence as every electronic device, communication, computer network even pacemakers fail simultaneously...
Five years later the world is still at war, governments are at loggerheads in an attempt to resolve the situation but don't trust anyone else as paranoia and mistrust cause a breakdown in communication between East and West.
Does that work better?
