Turan?

Below is a list of the various unit summaries I proposed for a possible Conan miniatures game. Some are clearly familiar and others the product of a fertile imagination and a desire to put interesting, yet viable, units on the tabletop. Don't anybody get over-excited about this hapening any time soon though. I'm showing you this just for fun.

UNIT TYPES
Cataphracts. Armoured horsemen on part armoured horses armed with kontos, shield and bow.
Sipahis. Mailed lancers, less powerful than a western knight but very flexible, armed with lance, shield and bow.
Horse Archers. Unarmoured riders famed for their use of the mounted Hyrkanian bow.
Camel Troops. Unarmoured horse-scarers. Armed with the Hyrkanian bow.
Desert Elephants. Part armoured terror weapons driven madly into enemy ranks.
Yuetshi Infantry. Unwilling conscript troops chained together and armed with short spears and shields.
Ghulam Infantry. Fanatical slave troops, clad in light armour and equipped with thrusting spear and shield.
Marines. Turanian naval infantry, armed with scimitar, small shield and Hyrkanian bows.
Ziyars. Fire pot throwing light artillery.
Mangonels. Rock throwing catapults.
Sipahis of the Guard. Elite mailed lancers, armed as their regular counterparts.
Immortals. A single unit of fully armoured cataphracts.
Sorcerers. From any of a plethora of religious groups or even mercenaries.

Ooh, what a lovely little list. Thanks for the sneak peak. I think what we've discussed far actually fits very well with the above list: perhaps indicating that we will eventually see something along those lines. I really hope it'll be more central asiatic than middle eastern or Ottoman though...

BTW: Instead of using the persian immortals, it would be cool to make a slight variant. Maybe they are connected to the cult of the Living Tarim (See: living - immortal), and consist of the most warlike sons of the chief noble clans. An aristocratic force to balance the royal sipahis.

It would also be nice to give the sipahis (and the ghulams?) a wider "jannissary"-like role as enforcer of the sultans will, and maybe paramilitary secret police.

Old Bear: I quite like this list. One thing I'd suggest to people running the Turanian army would be to have some of them gradually appear as say Yezdigerd for instance re-does the army to a higher standard.

Don't forget this is by no means an official list. I did submit the design plans for the game which were very well received at Conan Properties but we have a lot of irons in the fire before we may go back to look at Conan on the tabletop again.
