Trip weapons?

I was looking for something a bit different, like a trip weapon. But, I can only find the whip in the basic rules. Am I missing something, or is that it in the basic rules?

And are there any others in other books?

As always thanks for any consideration.

A whip-wielding scholar with a nice fedora hat and grey-green uniform would work nicely as well. Slight fear of snakes, interest with ancient relics and ruins of ages past...

:)

The interest in ancient stuff was part of the idea. No magic, so I wanted a different weapon. Whip was cool for about a minute, until I realized what I was setting up.

So now a bill he is not proficient with, and no advanced trip either. Most likely I will pick up a few levels of soldier to make him at least able to defend himself. Right now he is just a hp target.

you could get him just one single level of soldier, and get him a weapon focus - whatever trip weapon you want.

The bill's a nice weapon because it has decent damage and can be used as two types of damage, as well as trip.

Whip is funny, but not all effective in combat I would wager. Especially against someone who has any type of armor.

Maybe slide in a level or two of thief for the sneak attack style - whatever weapon you want? As long as it's a one-handed weapon, you should be fine. :)

I saw the Scholar as the driving force to go to various ruins and such like for the gropup to play in. Adding a whip While I had not deliberately copied a well know whip weilder, nobody would have believed me.

Just as a few years ago it became manditory for every dark elf to use two scimitars. I bet at least a few of those people hit on the idea all by themselves. But nobdy will ever believe them.

Is the specific concern just an ability to survive combat or, by defend himself, do you mean contribute to winning combats?

If surviving combat, Combat Expertise, 5 ranks in Tumble, and fighting defensively jacks up DV a lot. If contributing to winning combats, then, things get more complicated.

1st level Scholar and not an acrobat, so no tumble. Lots of ranks in knowledge. Think of a bookish lad that has beenm raised to be a preist, but really wants to go exploring old tombs. To start with survival is about all he hopes for.

I was never a big fan of the DND "optimizedd" school of ply. Every PC does not need to be a walking death machine. As long as the charecter is fun and interesting for me and the rest of the group, that is good enough.

Not much you can expect from a first level character. Running away and hiding are good tactics until gaining some levels.

About the best you can do is Submissive Demeanor and True Submissive from Hyboria's Fallen.

Even then, scholars have squishyness problems at higher levels. True Submissive isn't applicable to every situation. High CON and either high STR or DEX are important, which shouldn't be as much of a burden for a nonsorcerous scholar since the character won't need high WIS for power points or high CHA for magical attack bonus.

...or a level of Soldier, and have him walk with at least a shield, and maybe some nice armor. Makes the situation much more interesting.

Scholastic robes have a tendency to rip easily under morningstars and such... :)
