Trial of Blood

i would support my gaming store...but they stopped selling Conan (though i did get most of the 1st edition Conan books there)..so i am forced to buy all my Conan rpg stuff through online sources (ie Amazon & Paizo) as there is no gaming store where i live that carries it (and i'm gleefully looking forward to receiving 'Trial of Blood' which should make it here next week)

I'm looking to buy Trial of Blood, but Amazon still doesn't have it.

Yeah, I had to buy it from one of the 3rd party suppliers on Amazon. Don't know what's going on with Amazon proper.

I found it for $24.47 plus shipping, which is about $10 bucks cheaper than I've seen it elsewhere.

I'm waiting on Amazon, though...I want some other stuff, and I can get it through them without being charged for shipping.

I wish they'd hurry.

i finally got my copy of Trial of Blood today....purchased earlier though Paizo's website...but, content aside, i have to say i have great reservations about the fact that this is a softcover book...it makes it extremely hard to sit down to use it during a gaming session because the book will not stay open..unless you pull the book apart.

The only thing i could see doing is using a book mark..and CONSTANTLY flipping to the part you're dealing with. Note that i am NOT referring to the content..which i can't comment on..cuz i haven't had time to look at it. I loved the hardcover nature of the Drow Wars...it was perfect. And was definitely worth every penny i paid for it.

We are taking these comments to heart (as you will see on the forthcoming State of the Mongoose), and _all_ books of this size next year will be hardback.

Can anyone tell me how high the characters will rise in level after completing Trial of Blood? The book suggests that the characters will start at lvl 1, but it doesn't say what level they might be once they're finished. I was just wondering so I can plan on the adventures that would follow this one.

On the Planet Mongoose blog writer Bryan Steele mentions the campaign should end with characters around 12-13th level. Still have not received my copy yet...

Just got my copy of ToB from an Amazon 3rd party seller. It looks good! I like the breakdown of Experience Awards. Sadly, I'm mid-campaign and it will likely be several years before I'm able to run this. :(

any further comments on this campaign?

I've only read very briefly through the book, and there are good things to be said about it too, however, here are some negative ones:

1) I don't like the "save the world" (or at least "save Conan") setup. The "good king vs evil sorcerer" plot smells too much of high fantasy, not swords and sorcery.

2) The campaign seems to suffer from excessive railroading.

3) It is a big book, but I'm sure at least half of it is taken up by NPC stat blocks. Long stat blocks are inherent with the d20 system, however Mongoose could have chosen a more condensed statblock format to save space and cram more (adventure) content in.

4) It is a big book, however, there are only two (!) maps in the whole book! Maps have never been the strength of Mongoose's Conan books and adventures, but this was very disappointing.

The bigger the campaign, the more excessive the railroading tends to be. It's like the authors want to make sure that the players don't miss a scene of their genially written masterpiece, let alone change anything in their carefully designed, intricate and detailed plot.

We started yesterday with char creation and soon my players are on the Trial of Blood - I don't mind Railroading very much (hey, I like long Cthulhu campaigns, so how can I) - normally my players have enough alternatives, so that the railroading core plot remains unseen for them.

edit: oh, and yes, the cover suxx deluxe. Very soft softcover, first thing it did was to "roll up", I fear that the plastic on the paper of the cover will loosen at the edge. (I should have made a plastic-wrap (word?) on it, but I forgot somehow ...)

Finally received my copy of Trial of Blood. Great looking book - stout, excellent size book. Good addition to the line, IMO. Also, I enjoyed the fiction at the front of the book.

Just started reading the book but so far so good. 8)

Probably! Had to update my order 2-3 times from Amazon. Worth the wait though - I'm really liking the quality of the presentation and so far the adventure is intriguing..
