Traveller GM screen - where is it?

IanBruntlett

Emperor Mongoose
I visited Newcastle today to get the GM's screen. It might be slightly redundant because over the past 11 or so months I've photocopied and pasted key tables to the inside of my core rule book.

It wasn't in - both Forbidden Planet and Travelling Man didn't have it in stock.

Any ideas? If you have seen it, what's it got in it?

Having seen it at the Mongoose Hall Traveller day, I can say it's very nice. Good and thick. Of course it's a pity they didn't use my invaluable combat flowchart :D but you can lead a horse to water....

As far as the player side, the artwork to my taste is "mheeah". Considering so many people have vastly different ideas of what a spaceship bridge looks like, using one was possibly not so wise. Just a space-/planet-scape would have been more generally appreciated. Then again, I prefer to have useful tables, etc. for the players rather than 'inspirational' art. When I get mine, I will either paperclip photocopied tables, etc. to the player's side or I'll scan and print the GM side and put those into my generic plastic sleeve GM screen.

It isnt right though - the ship missile turn table hasnt been corrected with the errata. Pretty unforgivable getting this wrong, I think, on a product that purely is purchased for the tables it shows - there is nothing else on it!! Come on Mongoose get your act together please!! Do some proper checking of these things. I spotted the error in a few minutes.

Actually the GM screen does look quite nice but it isnt all that useful - there isnt a need for a large weapons table with Mongoose Traveller and that was always the main point in having a Ref screen before for me. Even if it had a proper Tech Level table like the original Traveller then perhaps it would have been a far more worth while purchase IMO. And if it had perhaps had accumulated all the various different weapons damages it could have been very useful as well - such as bows etc - but it doesnt. I wont be using it a great deal.

Well they had to maintain their track record. Every Traveller product, and I mean EVERY one, has obvious errors that should have been corrected by anyone with eyes. I suppose it's a sad sign of the times that standards are shrugged off so easily (and tolerated so easily by the majority).

What tables are actually included on it? We find ourselves flipping through the book constantly to find the right charts for space combat and vehicle combat, etc, and I was hoping the GM screen would have all of the stuff we needed in one place.

Got to say I agree with people about the level of errata in some of the books.

One of the things I hoped about the Mongoose releases was that we could get away from some of the problems that seemed to plague MegaTraveller and T4.

It makes me think very hard about buying new print releases as at least the PDFs get free updates from the online stores who supply them.

There are a fair amount of tables on it here is a list:

Task Difficulty
Time Frames
Success & Failure
Common Mods to Attacks
Task Chain DMs
Action Summary
Cover
Range
Weapon Ranges
Veh Damage Table
Veh Location Table
Reading World Profiles
Encounter Distance
Missiles
Damage Location Table
Bay Weapons
Turret Weapons
Radiation Exposure and Effects
Sensors Table
Detail by Sensors
Crew Damage
Ship Damage
Range Table (ship combat)
Weapon Range Mods

Actually I must apologise to Mongoose here I have looked again just now and the missile table is actually correct on the screen. Very sorry for that remark I dont know what I was looking at at the time - must have been a long day at work or something. I can emphatically say that all the tables on the referee screen are actually correct.

I have to admit that i really only wanted one chart on the Screen, the UWP translation. I always have trouble rembering which value is which.

That one there is good. then all the others are added in nicely.

Will be using it for the first time tonight, and so will have a better idea of how it works then.

I do like what tables are include and how they are placed according to subject. A very nice layout and size. Regarding size, other screens I've used were only one/two fold or actually two separate screens.

The best thing I like is the screen is made out of very good cardboard, not just a glossy card stock paper. Very durable!

Only one very minor nitpick and it's something other screens have included. What I'm talking about is supplemental material like mini-adventures or NPCs (Contacts, Patrons, Enemies, etc). tI didn't turn me off once I bought it. I'm just got use to some sort of bonus stuff.

You have my sympathy, I was sure the navigation skill description was missing from my first print run Main Book, but I was wrong in the end,

Good to know the GM screen is error free.

I will admit that I had not purchased the product, but now that I know that it does not have errors I will be purchasing it shortly.

My apologizes as well for the sharp comment I made, especially as it was undeserved.

I, too, will be buying this when I get the chance.
