For MJD or anyone who can answer this one.
In Far Avalon the ITL is several times referred to as being cheaper than FTLs
True-Translight (True-TL or Full-TL, usually
abbreviated FTL) drive systems allow a starship
to cross between star systems without
undue risk. They are more bulky and expensive
than ITL systems but less restricted in
their movements.
OR
Although the ITL and FTL systems built using the
same technology have the same nominal speed,
obviously an FTL system allows a greater freedom of
movement while ITL is far cheaper
My question is where is the ITL cheaper?
The rules in book 3 say : Use the Drive Costs table on TMB 107 and the Performance at Hull Volume table on TMB 108 as normal to calculate the drive letter required for the starship. The number indicating Jump Performance is used to represent the Translight Drive Speed.
So a 200Dton ship fitting a "B" drive would have FTL 2 or ITL 2, the ITL drive takes 30Dtons and costs Mcr20. The FTL takes 35Dtons and costs Mcr20.
Both drives have the same performance in system but for the same price and 5 extra Dtons the FTL has a range of 10LY while the ITL has a range of 0.6LY.
Could you point out what I missed, is there a note somewhere saying that the ITL is a factor cheaper or are small ITL ships very uncommon because it’s only a few more Dtons for FTL at low rating and the cost is the same?
PS I do like the drives concept and the setting and will get book 2 at some point to go with books 1 and 3
Many thanks for your time and consideration.
