Hello,
I have one question for Traveller advancement, which is written briefly at end of skills chapter. The question is simple: Is it intentional that training of new skills does not have any correlation of th skill level descriptions? The character creation system on itself does produce characters with reasonable levels of skills for their age - thus I am not willing to change functional parts of the system.
The problem can be best emphasized with 22 years old Wesley Crusher. With good luck of his first term within Navy, he has got 3 skill rolls - one from advancement of rank, and two from , of which he has used 1 in Service Skill and got Engineering and rest in personal development. Wesley chose Engineering (J-Drive).
Then the game begins. After 3 weeks he has Engineerign 2. After further 5 weeks he has Engineerign 3. Then that goes on. After a year (52 weeks), we have one of the best Engineers of the galaxy with his Engineering (J-Drive) 7 - and he is 23 years old.
(level 2 takes 3 weeks, level 3 takes additional 5 weeks, level 4 takes 7 weeks, level 5 takes 9 weeks, level 6 takes 11 weeks, level 7 takes 13 weeks, total of 48 weeks).
I know that case is exaggeration, but even with skill total of 26 produces quite fast learning of new skill levels. Okay, for most games, this is not apparent, because span isn't years - the problem arise when I simulated character advancement for crew of a ship - in which most members of the crew can become player characters for the saga.
I myself would like to see the skill description requiring years of practice on skill for each level fitting the character advancement. I am thus asking, where in the forum should I paste my suggestion for alpha version of my house rule replacement?
