Traveller 5

Traveller has always gone to lengths to get more detailed than what's needed to play a simple game. Even after all these decades, a lot of Traveller fans love the detail and builder features. Mongoose went back to simpler times and it's fantastic for the fast and fun game but I love the building aspect that drew me to Traveller back in the 70s. Love building using Mongoose rules and I love T5 going back to the detailed building rules (including characters) of earlier editions. Yeah, I call it a textbook but that's a reference to the wealth of detailed information not dry data.

I'm deeply involved in Pirates of Drinax for the Mongoose system and love the simpler game mechanics but I will say if you like the Traveller game that much, you can't go wrong with T5 in your collection. It's all Traveller.

I own Traveller 5. It’s not all bad. I wouldn’t play it out of preference to any other version of the game - especially Mongoose’s version, which is much more accessible. Would I recommend it to anybody other than the most hardcore Traveller completist? Sorry, no. Not in the slightest. Flatly, you are not missing out on anything much, despite the excessive page count. If you want a better version of Marc Miller’s personal vision of the game then T4 is better.
