Traveller 20 to Mongoose Travller.

I'm starting my group on the "Cold Fuzion" campaign found in the Traveler 20 supplement "Gateway To Destiny." Can anyone suggest a way to convert T20 PCs to Mongoose Traveller?

I've not read the supplement so I don't know if it's required to use the supplied PCs, but wouldn't it be far better to simply roll up new characters using the MGT rules? That way your players get a feel for their characters, and have the benefit of the life experiences, contacts, enemies etc. that come with the generation process...

That's my 0.02 Cr anyway.

Yeah, probably best to re-roll them as Traveller* characters. IIRC there's a point-buy system in Traveller as well where you can custom-build them to be as close as possible to the T20 versions.

*: In agreement with some others in the Traveller community, I'm no longer calling it "Mongoose Traveller" or "MongTrav" or "MGT" anymore - just "Traveller". I'll still refer to older versions of the game as CT, MT, TNE, T4, GT, T20 etc, but Mongoose's version of the game is the current (and future) version and as such I think it's the one that deserves to be called "Traveller" on its own.

Meh. "Traveller" is the whole. When talking about a specific edition and its products, disambiguation is called for. In the case of Mongoose's edition, the re-use of CT book names pretty much requires edition-specific labels.

Indeed, what about T5? It's release, while delayed, is still up and coming. Both games will be Traveller.. I'll stick with my acronyms for now, methinks. :P

*shrug*

There's nothing stopping anyone from referring to the old material (and disambiguation is fine for that purpose) - but let's face it, Mongoose (and Marc) is hardly going to achieve their goal of unifying Traveller if people keep treating it like just another version of the game. So why not just call what they're doing "Traveller" and be done with it? If you're talking about the CT versions of the supplements then putting "CT" in front of it makes that clear, but why not refer to the Mongoose versions as just "High Guard" and "Mercenary"? They're the current, relevant versions of the books after all.

As for T5... well, it's past July 15th (the last reported "final date" for it) and nothing's happened on that front, has it...

Anyway. Whatever. Didn't think that this would derail the thread... so let's get back to converting characters!

That's the rub, EDG... I'm NOT converting over. I liked the Playtest stuff, but the feel was tied to mechanics no longer there, and MT does (out of the box) more of what I need. I may adopt Char Gen, but since Marc has not pulled MT, TNE, nor T4 from PDF availability, Mongoose has no edge for me.

It IS "just another version"... and a decent workhorse at that... but unless and until the older editions are unavailable for new legal acquisition, they can continue to divide the market.

I'm likely to buy and use MHG... but it will only be part of a larger collection.

And until Marc decanonizes EVERYTHING except the current edition, people will still be searching prior editions for "Truths" about the OTU. And arguing about what X means.

Let me rephrase then - for those of us who are actually embracing the future here, let's just call it "Traveller".

I'm sure everyone else who is still happy with their older versions, can (and most likely will) just think of it as yet another version of Traveller to add to the list.

But frankly, I think most new folks who get High Guard or Mercenary in the coming months aren't going to care what the older CT rules said about those subjects and won't have a need to refer to them either.

Whilst I have always just the term MongTrav in the past I agree with EDG as to the use of Traveller now, talking (like EDG) to some others it make sense to call the Mongoose version Traveller as its the current version and the future for Traveller as a product - yes T5 will be around but as it stands Mongoose is Traveller.

Stats: T20 stat time (12/18 )?
Skills: divide T20 skill ranks by either 5 or 4 (offhand 4)
Feats: treat as fluff, part of the career, licenses, equipment or skills depending on what the feat covers
Damage: start with Personal Weapons of Charted Space since it has both T20 and CT stats for weapon damages, CT should be close to MGT
Equipment: I think prices are close enough in a pinch, try them as is and adjust as needed if you think it's warranted. TLs of stuff should also be fairly close.

And can we PLEASE shunt WTF to call this game off to PM or another thread? I'd like to see this Traveller forum not turn into the worst aspects of TML or CotI. This thread's about one aspect of playing the game, not Edition Wars, Canon or whether or not Hivers wear pink fuzzy slippers.

I completely agree. I will begin doing so as well except in specific instances where differentiation of versions is important.
