Dear Fellow Forumites,

i'm not able to translate the three words fanes, gales and sheres.

I haven't found any translation or explanation in dictionaries,
the internet or translation programms.

I would be very grateful, if somebody could explain the meaning
of the three words.

The only translation i have is "Tempel" [engl. temple] for fanes.

English: Lennier of the third Fane of Chodomo
German: Lennier vom dritten Tempel des Chodomo

In one week, i start the second season of my Campaign,
and i would like to use more than only religious Characters.

Best regards,
Mit freundlichen Grüßen
Beckett

I'd go for "Lennier vom dritten Fane des Chodomo" myself :) At best it's archaic English (and certainly not from a latin route, in which case it's Germanic anyway...), but I suspect that it's a Minbari term and should be left as such.

I'll check if there's a German soundtrack on any of the DVD's I have, and see what they used in the series...

LBH will probably know the answer to this one ;)

Well I dug out the DVD, Seaon 1 Disc 2 Episode 5, Chapter 3, Second main scene, Lennier arrives. both the German subtitles and audio replace Fane with Tempel.

However, until we know what Fane actually means it wouuld be erroneous to assume this was correct. It could mean anything, perhaps they believe in the third book of writings of Chudomo.

Just had a quick look the Minbari Federation factbook, no info I could see there. Also it spells Fain not Fane (the DVD subtitles spell it Fane as do other sources I have).

The French audio and subtitles use 'temple' for Fane.

I would go with Fane and not bother to translate, esmplain to your players that the third Fane of Chudomo is an order of some sort, probably religious and thats really all they need to know.

As for gales and sheres, if you could quote their use it would help me find an answer.

Minbari Federation Fact Book
page 29.

"Warrior caste crèches are called sheres, the religious has fanes,
and the worker's caste crèches are called gales."

My problem is, there is the german translation of "Tempel" for "fanes"
in the series.
All my Player have seen the whole series, and so they know
"Lennier vom dritten Tempel des Chodomo."

I cannot use fane. There is no german word like fane.

And so i try to translate shere and gale.
Or find the meaning of the two words.

Or are fane, gale and sheres are new word creations from JMS?
Maybe you can help me to find words fitting the temple-translation
for the worker and the warrior caste... as "Neroon from the eight fortess
of Sharlin" or "Brennar from the first workshop of Valen".

Or i go for "Lennier vom dritten Fane des Chodomo".

Thank for the Replys,
and the investigations,
Beckett

They are pretty much Minbari words invented for the series.
I'd suggest going with what feels right for you - if you prefer substituting real words such as fortress and workshop then that looks pretty good to me.

Actually that's not bad but if you do that, you have to do the same for everything else that comes after this and then it could become quite... messy. I'm Swedish myself and usually try to translate terms but somewhere you have to stop. Fane/fain, gale and shere are Minbari terms and used as such so I really don't se the need to translate them into neither English or German (or Swedish for that matter).

I say go with "Lennier vom dritten Fane des Chodomo" and "Neroon vom achten Gale des Sharlin" and so on and so forth. If your players complain that they say "Tempel" in the series give them a slap or two and remind them that you are the Games Master. :D

Just my € 0.02

Well spotted nodistdouble, I did say I only had a quick look.

I agree with the suggestios, especially Dr. Goth, although rather than alapping them I suggest a G'Kar style reprimand . . .

"Put your face in the book . . . .(THWACK)"
"Here endeth the lesson"
