Third Imperium Fluff?

I placed my order for the Third Imperium Traveller book on Amazon a short while ago and I saw one review that there is no new info for long time fans. I'm not new to the Traveller sytems, but I am a neophyte when it comes to Third Imperium trivia.

I would appreciate it if resources could be pointed out to me as to what sort of setting info has been in prior editions and which Third Imperium PDFs/Products would be worth the addition to my Traveller collection to round out the fluff on the setting.

So far, the only 3I book out is The Spinward Marches. That details the basics of the 3I as well as the rest of the cultures such as the Zhos and the Aslan, before launching into the Spinward Marches proper.

The Aslan sourcebook, Project Steel and Tripwire provide further detail. There's a Zhodani alien module some way down the line, and other books probably in the planning stages to watch out for - but so far, it's just The Spinward Marches and Project Steel out now with any details.

Actually, I'm talking about prior edition(s) material. Anything that provides mostly background/setting info.

There is tons of stuff out there - 30-odd years and 7 versions worth!
These are from many rule sets but the background info is all transferable-
I recommend -
1) The Journal of the Travellers Aid Society reprint compilations from Far Future Enterprises - this is where the setting was originally fleshed out and developed (also the other reprints in this series).
2) Megatraveller Imperial Encyclopaedia
3) T4 Millieu 0 - for info on the Imperium at year 0
4) Gateway Domain Sourcebook (Quicklink Interactive) for the Gateway Domain in about year 1000
5) Most of the GURPS Traveller sourcebooks - Solomani Rim, Modular Cutter, Nobles, Starports are really really good and many others.
Em... probably more.

These should be a good starter, some are out of print, may have to scour your slightly-despised-but-annoyingly-indispensible auction site.

Hope that helps

P.S - there is also quite a bit on the web - try traveller downport and freelance traveller.

The Traveller Adventure ( a full sized book and not one of the small LBB adventures ), which is set in the Aramis sub-sector of the Spinward Marches. The campain takes place over 11+ of it's the worlds. It has lots of backbround, like 3 pages on the exploration and setelment of the area. A good look at Tradewar, transport companies of Aramis, 5 pages of Library data, and a ship directory. Which includes Imperiallines, a front for Jump-6 Imperial courier service. The last 7 pages is basic Vargr society and character generation, for CT with 3 common Vargr ships.

There is a lot out to fill out the Imperium. Alien books for Mega traveller if you can find them are great. Spinward marches by Mongoose is good if you don't have it. Make some of your own legends too. Give it your own flavor.

One thing that was a constant in our campaigns before was Astro Blast Beer. The cheapest nastiest beer in the Imperium. Made from waste skimmed off gas giants. Come up with a few kernels like that of your own and bam it starts looking fleshed out. :)

That's funny. In my Futura game setting, we had two infamous drinks

Panther Piss, 1 Cr per pitcher, it would eat a hole in a table if left there long enough

Mega Drink, 1 MCr a shot glass, it was so smooth that it made water taste plain. 90 % chance upon taking a drink that the player would pass out for 20 mins- Con (End or Stamina)

I guess every home brew game has its famous, found every drinks.

Mind Eraser... ehr... wait, a minute, I think that's are real drink.. can't remember...

er, this is embarrassing

yep, got Spinward Marches (and my old grognard head remembers a lot more books I have lost over the years, probably in my barren, non gaming episode) but I just wondered if there was actually a book
called "The Third Imperium"

No. But if you can find the Imperial Encyclopedia (from MegaTraveller), it gives alot of background for the Third Imperium and history. It also describes in detail the Nobility and government of the Third Imperium.

Yep, got that one 8)

I was just wondering what I had missed, I figured "Is there a book out there specifically entitled the Third Imperium"

Perhaps, one day ... *hint hint* *nudges msprange*

There was, at one point in time, talk of such a thing. I remember MJD discussing it in posts over two years ago, maybe longer now. I've heard of it also being discussed for GURPS Traveller, but that may be my memory mis-serving me again. (Damn Scout Brew.)

I think it's one of those vaporware projects from long ago, but I know that there'd be a market for it, should it ever come to pass. (If someone's looking for a way to break in, and has the resources available to do it right, then making a pitch to msprange about it might be a good idea, if you can back up the pitch with output.)

This was something I wanted to do with QLI - the definitive Third Imperium sourcebook.

Unfortunately QLI ran into problems, such that they didn't manage to publish the work I'd already done to that date, let alone new stuff.

I won't be working with QLI again - indeed, I don't expect to see them publish anything else now - but the idea is still there.

Are there any problems with you approaching Mongoose Matt about getting the same book published under the Mongoose label?

Not that I know of.

I never wrote the book, and if I had the copyright would remain mine unless QLI paid me for it. Which never happened and isn't going to.

Indeed, QLI not paying me for stuff is a bit of an issue right now...

Truthfully, I like the 3I the way Mongoose (MJD specifickly) presented it: broad strokes with lots of room to add in your own fluff. The 3I game I ran last year had a take on the setting that was, I'm sure, quite different than someone's 3I game. Its flexible enough that I can graph my own ideas onto it while still providing my players enough of a framework to make characters from.
