Them GB Gods

Hello!

Not being a native English speaker, I have found some of the (tongue-in-cheek) names of the GB Gods quite perplexing (however, some, for instance, are rather easy to spot as corrupted names, like Chirshil as Churchill, Jhone, Phawl, etc., as John, Paul George & Ringo). Could someone please elucidate & illuminate me on this subject?

Thanks a mil:

It all stems from the time the Hawkmoon saga was written, back in 1967. The Beatles were at the height of their popularity, Harold Wilson was Prime Minister, and there was a strong satirical tradition in the UK at the time.

Moorcock's always been very playful with popular contemporary culture in his work, and the gods of Granbretan are a tongue in cheek 'What If...' idea that is great fun.

He didn't stop at politicians and pop stars though. Moorcock edited the highly influential 'New Worlds' SF magazine, and regular contributors also became gods, too.

Jayjee Blad - J G Ballard; Jim Slas - Jim Sladek and Brin Adass - Brian Aldiss. All friends and contributors to New Worlds at the time.

It's interesting to wonder what gods we'd have in GB if Moorcock was writing the saga now:

Tonbliar - the Warmonger?
Madg-Oona - Mystic Chantreuse of the Chameleon Order?
Jorgshrub - The Word Mangler?

Always fun to make-up new gods based on the fallen idols of today's society!

I can't see the GranBretannians worshipping an Amerhek deity though.

Maybe Dubja was Tonblairs secret master and the reason for his low status in the pantheon. No true Beastmask would offer sacrifice to one bounden to another.

The gods of GranBretan are all figures from a time when GB could delude itself that it was still a mighty power. Publishing dates to one side maybe that is why they and not more recent public figures are so revered?

Grrrr

Ah, but Lord Dub Jah was only the ensorcelled minion of the "Ever Smirking-puppetmaster" Tonblair and his militant cohort Dihk Ch'annie.

Tonblair, "doe-eyed patron of dentists" (whatever they were!?!), just sat back in the shadows, smiled his 'Cheshire Grin', and pulled on the 'Strings of Allied Destiny'....

Thus the legends state - and who are we to doubt them?
