The Martian

Just saw it and was amazed. Still wondering about the perchlorate issue. Won't reveal anything for the moment but it's a great Traveller inspiration hard science scifi movie. Pretty much I was seeing everything about it in terms of Traveller.

Heard an NPR report where the Author said he had received a lot of help in his development of the book. Other than a few minor issues, the science in the movie is pretty solid.

Made it even more fun for me knowing that.

In a way, Traveller beat you to it with Adventure 4: Marooned/ Marooned Alone.

The Martian is definitely hard scifi as Robinson Crusoe on Mars was more fanciful... closer to Traveller with science liberties for a fun story. Both work equally.

Got me wondering at a remake but set on Pluto...

Premise similar enough, unexpected pressure changes beneath Pluto force them to evacuate but during the evacuation and unexplained electromagnetic disturbance disrupts communications and during their return to their ship a couple of them are thought killed.

Same attempt to locate them except the reason they're forced to leave is because the surface area where their ship is currently sitting on is destabilizing with every evidence its about to collapse.

They head off world and due to damage to their ship they're unable to restore communications until they get back to their main ship.

The tremors on the world below and the electromagnetic interference continue for a few more days forcing them to prepare for the trip back which will take months.

Meanwhile down on the surface one of the stranded astronauts locates and rescues her unconscious comrade and pulls him clear discovering their camp site is outside of the area effected by the tremors but inside the electromagnetic interference so she can't signal the others.

She manages to get him back inside and treats his injuries.

Now since I'm thinking roleplaying I'm thinking more than one character left behind and them dealing with what's happened and what to do next.

Since we're talking Pluto obviously their suits are designed to survive what they know about Pluto but I am assuming there's a lot they don't know meaning just how much supplies would they bring down with them and would they plan ahead for the next expedition like they did in the movie?

Just how far can I go and keep this science fact and not pure science fiction?

Unlike the movie where they checked satellite images and realised someone was still on Mars how would they handle this with a Pluto version?

Would it be more they figure a way to send a message back but because of the time lag it takes maybe a year or so before they realise that not only was there a problem forcing their expedition to return early but they've left two members of their team behind and now they've got to plan a rescue mission with their returning expedition now about to pass Jupiter roughly under a half of the way home?

How long would it take for a manned ship to reach Pluto and return?

How long would such an expedition spend on Pluto's surface?

What kind of ship drive would be needed?

An Ion drive?

That rumoured warp drive they mentioned a few months ago?

If you had to set a date when this could be feasible are we talking Space 2099? :?
