The Iridium Games.

So, I got a PM asking about the 'recreation ship' I'd mentioned earlier in this thread. The messenger said they'd never seen one.

The ship in question is the Alesco-class Personnel Support Ship and appears in Mongoose Traveller 1st ed. Trillion Credit Squadron on pg. 103.
She is a TL 12, 25 kton support vessel that combines a hospital ship with a recreation ship. Her performance is Fleet Standard for TL 12: J-3 and 3G maneuver. She can transport 1000 awake patients in the hospital wards and 1500 passengers in the recreation decks and has a crew of 370, about a third of which is Medical Dept. As one might guess, she is VERY weak on weaponry... only 10 triple laser turrets and 10 sandcaster turrets for close defense.
So let's extrapolate up a couple tech levels.
TL 14 has a Fleet Mobility Standard of J-4 and 5G. Hitting travellermaps, a J-4 route from the farthest site of a Sector Games [Regina, Spinward Marches] to Capital at J-4 and presuming 2 Jumps a month nets you 78, about a year and a half.
If we dispense with most of the medical facilities, we have PLENTY of room for training facilities of all sorts. If we keep one-quarter of the medical facilities, that's still a top flight hospital with room for 250 patients actually in the wards and room left over for rehab facilities for injured athletes.

That’s an excellent write up. Thanks!

I would love to see an Iridium Games. The different events, especially combat sports like Stunner Duels could be cool!

The Iridium Games will treat all combat-derived sports as combat exercises.
- Shooting events will involve firearms, not airguns. The two main divisions will be Military/LEO and Civilian
- Fencing events [including cutlass, kendo, etc.] will be stun weapons on low settings. You don't fight for a touch or point, you fight until one of you cannot continue or quits.
- Ditto the martial arts sports.
- The classic Pentathlon and Decathlon will be revived to include the combat aspects of both sports. Pistol, fencing, wrestling, and horsemanship will be held by the standard rules of those sports.

The Game also include OTU sports like Grav-ball, kian races, and orbital skydiving.

I can only imagine the details needed for 'horsemanship' for what counts as a creature to be ridden versus an active participant with the rider in the combat aspects.

Well, pentathlon's horsemanship is dressage, not really combat maneuvers [although that is where dressage comes from]. There's good arguments for and against changing that to something more directly combat related.

The Iridium Games are not to be thought of as a blood-sport. There are events that have absolutely nothing to do with the marital arts at all. Gymnastics, swimming, track and field, skiiing, all these have little to do with military disciplines and these will be showcased as much as any other sport.
I can see great viewer interest in the sports where all sophonts can compete without any one species having a distinct advantage. Zero-G Gymnastics would be a huge draw, for example, as would orbital skydiving. Grav-ball would have to be sorted by weight divisions given the full contact nature of the sport, of course, but there are a host of events where each species can compete against any athlete that enters.
