Terrain for SST Miniatures

Thanks Jellicoe, Starship Troopers actually lends itself quite well to a many varied terrain option, being able to make rock spires and other alien landscape. It's too bad that I can't really make much up in the way of terrain for naval games as it's just a matter of tossing out a blue cloth over a table, heh. I have been thinking of some ideas regarding coastal ports and naval bases (Pearl Harbor?). Maybe I'll make up a bunch of tropical islands, but they wouldn't necessarily be to ship scale. I'm coming up with some good ideas for urban structures for use with Battlefield Evo that could also be used with SST currently. Stay tuned.

One could always have a coastline with some artillery emplacements for a ship to shore duel.

Yes, indeed. Any islands I make will have some 4.7"-8" coastal guns for sure. Look up what happened to the first invasion attempt at Wake island in 1941. A 5" coastal gun sank the Japanese destroyer Hayate and damaged other ships that came too close to shore in their overconfidence.

Let me also add that some of the gun turrets (the aft ones) salvaged from the sunken Arizona were dedicated as 14" coastal defence guns to guard Oahu, although only one turret was finished (Battery Pennsylvania) and was test fired only 4 days before Japan surrendered. The romantic in me is thinking of a scenario where the US has technical problems and delays with the Manhattan Project combined with a loss at Midway (all three US carriers sunk- no romance there yet), but when the Japanese fleet revisits Oahu the Arizona's main guns are there to defend Hawaii  .

hey buships, where did you get the drop boat cutout (i'm presuming) from?

rob

Rob, the dropship is a 25mm scale model from Old Crow in the UK. They actually call it the "Crow Lander", so go figure  . It works well as a proxy until the official stuff comes on-board. The decals were made on my printer. I scratch-built a larger troop pod than what it comes with, which works due to the wide wingspan of the unit. Here is a link to Old Crow so you can take a look-

cheers

i'll probably modify it into a Viking though, as the mongoose ones, when finally done  are going to cost more £££ than i can afford

a 14 year old living off £25 a month... AARRRGGGGHHHHHH!!!!

Oh, as I hadn't been to the site in awhile, I noticed the photo link doesn't look like it works, but it does. In the VTOL 25mm category. Thery have a gunship variant as well. The Splinters at the bottom that look like spinoffs of Hoth Snowspeeders make great small proxy fighters as well as can be used as gliding reentry escape pods.

just checked out that link, the crow lander is a 15mm model but its still the one you used right?

Nope, he offers the model in two scales. There is a link to the 25mm area where you should be able to find the 25mm variant. Here is a direct link to the page, if it helps any-

As I mentioned before, the "Image coming soon" is incorrect, as if you click it it shows the model. Note the different variants of the cargo and gunship versions.

Here's some pics of my fortress.

Ainsty are your best bet for resin scenery. Armourcast are great for full buildings and little things.

Rob, Old Crow bought Ainsty iirc, but that doesn't change your answer a bit  .

BuShips, CmdrKiley - that's amazing terrain from both of you. I'm sorry I didn't reply sooner, but I didn't receieve the e-mail telling me I had had replies. But wow, that's a lot I missed :D

And thanks everyone for being so polite and welcoming to me.

I have a brief question, and I know it shows how much of a beginner I am - but what did you do when you modelled your Control Bugs? Did you cut the, and I hate to call it this because I'm sure it has a name, 'excess metal which would slot into the stand', or did you attach the Bug to the base using this so it's hind legs hung back over the edge of the base?

Personally, I just cut it off, put a small blob of green stuff (a common type of modeling epoxy) on the base and pushed the bug into the green stuff. This is what the end result looked like (painted but not based).

I filled in the base slot, and glued the little critters' feet down with superglue.
