Suspending the Megadeal

...and before I'll buy these books (and if I buy any, I'm buying the full set), I demand a non-defective product - that means no missing sections, no FUBAR stats, and no mixed-up equipment sections.

Sadly, Mongoose appears unwilling to meet my requirements.

I can understand your frustration but I think it is easy to forget that there hasn't been the demand for gamebooks in recent years like the good old days of the '80's and early '90's. This is largely thanks to the growth of computer games. As such I think it is important to remember that the printers are not used to such projects, even if the originals are on hand. Mongoose are doing their best and I believe recent faults were directly down to the printers and not Mongoose themselves.
It has been said before that the original books had their faults, BK 14 Kai Surge instead of Kai Screen, wrong map Bk 28, GC cost 156 bk 22 and one of my favourites helping Paido fight off his attackers at 318 just outside Topham - how's that for a quick Bk 8!
By all means wait. I would hope that Mongoose waits until the first 28 books are printed until they produce 29... after all it is not fair on newer readers who don't possess 21-28 yet as they will only be Kai Master Senior. It would be nice to see the missing sections of 28 first as they may have useful items or important plot information for the latter books. Aside from that hopefully the printing issues will have been sorted - only with the old and new books together do I have a "non-defective product".

I also think it got to the point with some of these minor reprint issues that it became commercially unviable to replace them. They were not unwilling, but gettng towards unable to.

I hope that maybe, once the paperbacks are released and start to bring in serious money, that perhaps the earliest collector's editions may be replaced?

I have a correct Equipment section for Lone Wolf #4.

I ordered new copies for books 1-4 a while back to get the same size of the game books and the latest printing of game book 4 has a correct equipment section as far as I could see.

But does the reprinting of Book 2 have the fixed map?

Also, has the map for Book 5 been fixed? Check out the spellings and incorrect place names. Minor quibbles, I know - but I love the maps (and it was the beautiful, vivid and detailed world that first drew my ten year old self into the world of Lone Wolf).

And, just who is Warlord Zargon...? Does Zegron know he has a rival? No wonder the Darklords lost power if they couldn't keep tabs on their generals!

The copy I've got has the misprinted version of the map (the one where roads have become rivers, etc.) Ironically, my version of Book 1 (which I recieved first) has the corrected map!!!

Ah, well that's one mistake I haven't got. Who knows- misprinted stamps are more valuable, perhaps the same will one day happen with these books.

Not sure what you mean by fixed map.

The main difference between the first map (Mongoose print) and the one in the re-printed (US printer) version is that names are in white text instead of black text. The same difference can be seen for book 1.

The roads are not rivers in my Mongoose version print of book 1 and 2.

To summarize: the maps have received some changes but I have not looked at exactly what the changes are in detail.

When it comes to maps I by far prefer the Red Fox editions (and earlier), because of their lighter colours and better contrast.

I agree with the comments about the originals having brighter maps and a better contrast.

I think the Mongoose maps are better drawn, with more intricate artwork on, but it's not easy to see them as the colours are quite dark!

What would be great is if these maps were on the website, in lighter colours, so we could have a look at them in all their glory.

I'll second that, Writing Wolf :D .

How about it, Mongoose? Any chance of having downloadable copies of the maps in all their majestic glory? (please????)

:)

That's interesting. I didn't get a clear answer to this yet..
Is your book 4 equipment list different from the equipment list in book 6?
If so, it seems indeed to be correctly corrected!

I cross-checked the Equipment list with a LW Red Fox edition of The Chasm of Doom and the items which can be taken along are the same as far as I could see.

Warhammer, Dagger, 2x Laumspur, Sword, Spear, 5 Rations (meals), Mace, Chainmail Waistcoat, Shield.

That *is* the correct Equipment! - Hurray!
Thanx for confirming!

Since there is no errata published it's just that it is like a "Take that!" for preordering... (Since people who preordered received the first printing only, of course. Me anyway.)
No publishing of a downloadable errata or something for the poor folks like me? Mongoose? - No? --- Please..

My Mongoose copy for The Chasm of Doom, and incidently Shadow on the Sand, is missing the equipment section - I can live with that. What I really want to know is does your revised copy of Chasm of Doom have the same Gold Crowns figure as mine in the starting equipment section?

(1st Editions) Book 4 + 5 Red Fox, Beaver Books, etc.: Random Number + 10 Gold Crowns

Book 4 + 5 Mongoose: ONLY Random Number Gold Crowns.

So if I pick '0' I could start out with no Gold and no equipment in Books 1, 4 and 5 with Mongoose!

Hmm looks like the Credit Crunch (what we in UK call current economic state) has hit Magnamund too.

Would be really interested to know. I'm not that sad that I check every page of the books but I am working on something else otherwise I would never have noticed it.
