Status of SST

Mongoose
Ok, since the sticky's been deleted (Im still entirly unsure as to why it was put up there in the first place.... Unless they were going to announce yet another delay, and quite rightly realised that theres gonna be a hell of a backlash after seeing the posts in there...), I figured it wouldn't hurt to carry on some of the discussion in a proper post.

Simply put:

1) What is the bare minimum you'd have to see or hear for all the damage SST has suffered to be washed away?

2) What is the worst possible announcement Mongoose could make?

3) What would you be over the moon with happiness to see?

For my part;
1) Gencon deadlines being kept, and some actual pictures of the production figures (taken at a sensible distance so I can actually see some detail instead of the 1.5 meters they keep going for with BF:E figs) showing a clear improvement.

2) The games being deleyed, but don't worry, thats just becasue we want it to be the absolute best it can be and Mongoose fans deserve the best. Followed by some incredibly fuzzy pictures, which may, or may not show new figures.

3) A battle report between the Forth [Now changed to Arachnids under expert advice :D] and the Skinnies, played in both SST v1 and SST:Evo (Im assuming forth did recieve version 1 stats?), comparing and contrasting the rules changes, as well as highlighting all the beauty of the new figures.

Not an official deadline per see, but that was floated out as the date for the grand unvieling.
Also missing Gencon seems to have been one of the things which really hit BF:E (Other than the quality of the models, the price and release schedual) at the start.

This is just my opinion obviously, but without any independant gaming magazines, there really isn't anywhere to advertise new wargames/rpg's to the nerd market these days other than Gencon. Sure they can splash a few pictures round TMP, on here or Frothers or something, but thats something anyone can do. A presence at the largest hobbyt convention ensures all the little satalite media which gravitates towards our great hobby will pick it up, spreading the word far more effectivly than any press release ever could.
Added to that, the game is solid (Well the new version maybe slightly less robust than V1 but it does fit on two sides of A3...), people who play it tend to become converts pretty quickly, and a massive convention like Gencon is the very best place to introduce people to the system.
Also it lets Mongoose play up on its image of the friendliest mid-large RPG/wargames company out there. If I was at Gencon and played a game of AT-43, W40k, 5150 and SST, I'd go with SST, since it lets me feel all warm and gooey cause Im buying into a supperios system, whilst still supporting the lil man and at the same time selecting a system which will be supported for some time to come (In theory...).

Theres more, too, but the long and the short of it is, if Mongoose don't make Gencon it isn't going to be the end of the system, BUT it is going to be the end of the best chance the system has for a successful launch, I don't really see the game lasting much longer than V1 did if it doesn't take off, and I sure as hell don't see the game getting a 3rd edition if it doesnt fly this time.

Forth v1 and Forth Evo are really too different to compare. The Forth weren't even complete when the decision to create Evo was made (though they are quite complete now), and they have also had far more tweaking than any other army... so it might be cool... but I doubt it'll happen.

But here's a preview of the Forth from one of the earlier versions...

Turn 1 - Forth kill everything in [insert your army here] before taking their second action... game over

My nearly undefeated bug army of doom didn't last 3 turns against the original Forth rules :)

Cheers ColStone :D

 I didn't realise they were quite so balanced lol, maybe its best I don't try converting them over to V1...
Ok, in that case replace the word Forth with Arachnids in my 3rd answer :D, I wanted to see Forth in action, but I'd rather see an army which clearly needed balancing out (Skinnies) against a pretty solid force.

1. Bare Minimum: "Hey guys we had some problems and we can't release the models just yet, but here is the rule book."

2. Worst Possible: "We are changing the scale of SST, the rules will be even more polished and by that we mean pitifully simple, also the models will be edible for our new target audience: Brainless Children"
(I can appreciate it more if their audience is Brain-Ful Children)

3. Over the moon: Hey we have some problems, but the drops ships and tac fighter are done, here you go, 2$ each!

Oh, That's an easy one for me. I've been collecting for two years and only playing since last year. Just keep the current products available and going until the best possible upgrade is made. I'm happy with what is out there now that supports the movies, book, and CGI series. Well perhaps a dropship or two while waiting..

2) What is the worst possible announcement Mongoose could make?

"Due to negative feedback from the online wargaming community we've decided to cancel the game and redirect our efforts to another segment of the market. We'll be announcing our Miss Kitty Collectible card game in the the next S&P"

Full size dropships that I can actually open up and stick MI and Marauders into. Think Forgeworld Manta, but plastic instead of resin and cheaper like the cost of a large plastic toy at Target or WalMart. Somewhere in the range of $75-100 would be ok. I'd love to see Fleet figures too. When the prepaints come out they really should have all the movie or CGI characters as a personality set.

1. a clear and well thought rule book with nice art and background.
And a command suit for the exos.

2. another delay. It's almost always like this: delayed, delayed, delayed, gone.
Hope the almost concerns mongoose.

3. different poses for LAMI and finaly getting my hands on the skyhook and slingshot. Oh, and some more Marauders or other vehicles.
Affordable prices will also be welcome

3. Over the moon: Hey we have some problems, but the drops ships and tac fighter are done, here you go,

would do it for me aswell:)

1) All models will be available everywhere without players being forced to wait two months to get an Exo or a Basic Box, leading to entire communities dying off (or never establishing).

2) Old multi-part models are no longer available (would be the beginning of a long ebay journey for me as I won't buy any prepaints).

3) We have decided to cancel SST Evo (Forth will of course be available in SST 1.0) and instead will put that energy in making better and more models (TAC Fighter, Slingshot, a new plastic brain, new skinnies), assure good availability for them and start a whole new big advertising campaign.

(Most people I've talked to also don't like the Evo changes, so I'm not alone in this point)

1) First wave released.

2) SST Evo is canceled. I can live with delays.

3) Movie Moritas for LAMI.

I'd be really happy if the rulebook and army books for the races were out by time for GenCon.

I'd be content if they just kept working on it until they thought it was 100% ready. I'm extremely happy with the current rules and models.

Nothing could really upset me.

Once they release the prepaints I'll be running some Mongoose Miniature Demo Days at my game store and it'll be easy to get people hooked onto SST with prepaints. I'll also show BF:Evo, Mighty Armies, and B5 all the while.

I'm concerned for BF:Evo. Their figures and scale are pretty unique and the range isn't complete yet and I just want to make sure we get all the figures they've been playtesting with for balance. If they don't follow through on BF:Evo than I think they'll earn a lot of bad will.

So basically, the Forth are intended to be descendants of the EFTF, to continue the trend they started in BF: Evo :P

Hi guys,

There is an article in the next S&P explaining, chapter and verse, what is happening to both SST Evo and BF Evo - stay tuned!

 Thats not sounding too promising is it?

Perhaps, but what is the point in having an official mouthpiece publication if it's not where official mouthpiece announcements are published?

Not promising, but then the game was originally supposed to be out in April; I gave up holding my breath for it quite a while ago.

We need a mix of these two emoticons, I think, to cover this situation:

The first for the graphics, the second for the color :).
