Starline 2500 Gorns Walk on the Wild Side

I really, really need your feedback on this. If you folks don't love it, then the designs may die a quiet death. If you really don't like it, then we need to hear that so we don't go out on a skinny limb and fall in an ignominious heap.

Despite enjoying the Gorn from TOS/Enterprise, I had no interest in collecting their ships.. as they just didn't call to me.

This design however is calling to me.

I posted a bit on facebook but I'll add more here.

The pre war Gorn had a tight fisted leadership that didn't spend money. So a limited range and number of ships kept going by regular maintenance and upgrades. Decorations on the hulls to reflect the Gorn Confederation, the long careers of the ships and many sections on the hulls where systems have been upgraded. So raised sections, bumps etc where new systems have been fitted over the years. That Sublight comm array 214b that the ship was built with has been replaced twice, each time the replacement is a bit more powerful but also a bit bigger so there is a raised hull section above it etc etc.

The war era ships are built to be thrown into a ship grinder, no decorations as such but they are designed to be built more quickly, pre fabricated sections bolted together at the space dock. Obvious lines between the sections, more blocky constructions on the hull etc. Everything looking that little bit cruder and more quickly built.

I would expect the pre war ships to have smother hulls but with more bits on them where as the war era hulls have less bits but more sections and groves on the hulls where the hulls were assembled. Pre war would be more modified and upgraded. War era would have the current upgrades built in but would be more rough and ready assembly jobs.

Does this make sense???

As i said on the ADB forum, i love this idea. id also love to the destroyer from the module ships that were never built. the dual wing destroyer would be awesome. the current gorn designs are a bit plain, upgrading the look to be something more like what a reptile would build seems very appropriate at this time.

I don't really have an issue with the appearance of the Gorn ships (*)

Quite like the new look but I would not buy two of the same ship just because one has extra lines on it..........

* (except they don't say Gorn to me ;) but thats not going to change ).

It does indeed look good.

But my biggest issue with SF ships is they all look the same.
The Gorn Battle Destroyer, Medium Cruiser and Battle Cruiser all look the same.
The Light Cruiser, destroyer and heavy destroyer are all the same.

The design changes look good and are the spicing up that is really needed to make them look cool. And have them compare favourably to Firestorm Armada and BFG. But they need more differences between ships, IMHO.

BFG? The game where different classes are visibly recognizable by the weapons they carry with same hull otherwise?-) Unless it's different size category at which point different size + weapon loadout. Sounds familiar :)

I liked how the gorn looked in the Star Fleet Command computer game. Thats where I learned about the miniatures game from. They were box shaped, but I liked the the look of them alot better then the multiple circles. That was one of the greatest games I have ever played. When I was told it was based off of a miniatures board game that blew my mind at that time lol. I had never heard of Star Fleet Battles before playing the Star Fleet Commnand game.

wasn´t into Gorns till now but if you do the new design you get me hooked !
Do the same to the cats ( Kzinti) and you get me hooked there too!

Not really - there is a standard Imperial style - mainly the prominant armoured prow and broadside batteries, but there are a number of different designs - the Dauntless looks signifcantly different to the Gothic and its variants whilst maintaining a theme - the Firestorm and Sword class frigates ditto. The Cobra again maintains the standard Imperial Prow but otherwise very diffferent - then there are the Armgeddon pattern hulls etc......... Grand Cruisers slightly different again.

Astartes Warships again have a theme which has some aspect of the Imperial style but also has its own unique twist.

Chaos Warships again have the modular design for their cruisers but have varied forms for their heavy Capital warships and the escorts.......... and of course the ships can be used for both Imperial and Chaos fleets.

the same for the rest of the fleets................

Alot of this is in the eye of the beholder I feel - Some people feel that the SFU designs are eitehr good or somehow "realistic" others, like me, think they very samey and In some cases (Kzinti) ugly - but not in a good way.

I don't think the two views will shift really..........
