Stargate with Traveller

Anyone used Traveller for any sort of Stargate game?

Frankly Pioneer would be a good jumping off point, as it has rich detail around TL7+ and Traveller mechanics otherwise. Pioneer is a good jumping off point for a number of "near future" science fiction scenarios... which is exactly why it was written, no?

Traveller can comfortably handle anything from neolithic hunter gatherers, through any historical age, near future, far future and beyond.

For early Stargate scenarios then you have state of the art TL7 special forces, scientists and engineers, then add the sci fi tech as it feeds in from the scenarios.

I have run a Stargate like Traveller campaign, but not any time recently. And not specifically Stargate, as I haven't watched much of that show (I'm bad at watching TV shows). But the general idea of gates from world to world rather than spaceships, yes.

Google "Andy Slack Traveller Stargate SG-13" and you'll find Andy Slack's GURPS Lite document from 2001 which has an appendix on how to convert to Traveller and 2300 AD. I've got a vague memory of there being a Traveller only document as well, but my Google Fu is failing me on that one.

There's another one called "Stargate RPG for Traveller" written by Stouty with a link on these boards:

No, but depending on the feeling you want the game to have, there's Screams Amongst The Stars. You could incorporate ideas from that into Traveller.

Mothership is similar to ALIEN, but again, you can get good ideas from it.

The Doctor Who game could give you ideas even. And it's a 2d6 system. A little different than Traveller's 2d6, tho.

There is so much in Sci-Fi that's right on the edge of Horror that you could design an adventure as Horror and just back it off a little to make it 'not Horror'.

For Stargate, you are looking at 20th-21st Century Twilight 2000 era characters up against Space Gods. I'd put Ra and other denizens of the Stargate universe right at the edge of Horror. Action-Adventure, yes. And just enough Horror to make it scary.

See also “Earth Made of Glass” by John Barnes for a great riff on the gates concept.

Except Pioneer goal is to have no combat. And the p90 gets a lot of use in the franchise.

So the Chinese, the Russians, ESA, and the Indians all agree not to ship weapons or manufacture them on their Moon bases, and the US sticks with treaty obligations... the CIA does not embed assets within the space program...

no one get's into a love triangle and decides to hit someone with a spanner...

what a delightfully optimistic setting...

call me cynical but I will be adapting combat rules from other sources...

A goal of no combat doesn't mean no conflict. If a Pioneer situation might benefit from tactical combat, core Traveller is there to fill the gap. But the opposed resolution system listed under the Combat skill will suffice for the likely scenarios.

The above certainly handles someone goes for someone else with a spanner, or restraining a psychotic crew member, or a bar room brawl. Boons and Banes can also be used to tune the circumstances. Surprise attacks might be an unopposed roll. If there's a bunch of combatants, pair them up, or use an opposed group task.
