We seem to have set the hyperion as your average raid level ship so it got me thinking. What would be the averages for other priority levels. I was thinkin more to the lower end tier skirmish/patrol. So which low level ship do you favor and why?

Going to have to say I think the "Olympus-class Corvette" is probably the best tactical Skirmish level EA ship. Decent hull got 2 T arc weapons.

I don't think you'd go far wrong with the following "average" ships:

Hermes
Olympus
Hyperion
Omega
Warlock

All have good strengths and not too many weaknesses and this makes them fairly predictable. Also, they've probably been tested the most and work fairly well (I've not really seen any comments on them claiming any are too powerful or two weak).

The Olympus is also in the upper echelon on Skirmish ships. Nice all round firepower, turreted railgun & missles ( which can use varients depending on who you play) & interceptors.
They are the bane of my life with Aurora Starfuries.

there not as good as the "Hyperion-class Assault Cruiser (Variant)"

Olympus weakness is fighters or a decent beam/mini-beam hit.

Rail Hyperion is considerably better than the Olympus in most repects. Olympus is a good example of a skirmish-level ship.

Thats the same with most skirmish level ships. Except on the mini beam thing as a lot of skirmish ships don't have interceptors anyway.
I hardly think a Olympus is scared of fighters. A Vorchan is scared of fighters. I'm not really scared of a Assault Hyperion but Olympus is a different story.
Load your Olympus with Heavies if really want to scare people. It's the missles that make this one of the best Skirmish level ships. It can be tooled to fight anyone. It can have a choice of 2AD Turreted SL
SAP,Precise 30"
SAP,TD 15"
AP,DD, Precise 20"
AP,Precise, 30"?? ignores interceptors
15" ignores dodge
& the stealth causing missle
Very Handy since this game relys on crits a bit.
Not sayin Assaults aren't good as any 28 hit hull 5 with interceptors & anti fighter 2 skirmish level ships is pretty damn good. They are both ( Olympus & Hyperion varients) above what i'd call above average skirmish level ship.
It really difficult to say which ship is average but it would be something simlar to a thentus ( This also a pretty good ship) . Its hard to say as all the skirmish level ships have different roles.
Average Skirmish ship would be Hull 5, Speed 8, 20 Hits, 25 crew probably 8" 5AD twinlink allround , 12" Fwd 5AD AP & Antifighter 1

Have to agree that the Olympus is one of the best... the ability to engage at all ranges. and fight 'over the shoulder' holding range is not to be laughed at.

Goes to show what I've seen over and over again, maneuver and fighting options are simply not respected enough. Folks are way to focused on total AD or total damage numbers.

agreed.

I wouldn't place the hermes as the average patrol ship. Its missiles put it into a what I'd consider a non-standard configuration for a patrol class.
I'd probably select one from a different race.

I'd probably pick something other than the Hyperion for similar reasons. It may be balanced, but it's the balance of being overgunned and made of glass.

You know, I went through the patrol vessels last night, and I really couldn't find one that I would consider "average".

Consider the possibility that an average ship is not represented in the current fleet lists.

The obvious next step is to therefore try to stat up an average ship, one that may not be currently represented in the fleets.
