SST bugs vs Tyranids

Not to gooey. I mean, they were designed by professionals, not artists, whoever were hired to make the CG for the movies and whatnot. They look more real, and just as savage, and more alien, than tyranids (I collect both). Tyranids are cool in a sort of comic book way, but the bugs are very nice, and more realistic. They seem more deadly than nids, but bugs are not as gross. More scarey in my opinion.

Mongoose also had a brilliant sculptor for their arachind range, well most of it.

I'll go with arachnids, but Tyranids do have their good points.

It could be the fact my tyranids have been finished for a while and I am painting a big red plasma bug at the moment though.

In the "Bug" category of aliens I collect Arachnids, 1st and 2nd Edition Tyranids and Kryomeks. Tyranids are definitely more gooey if you are thinking acid drooling and slimy. Arachnids are more like classic insects, hard shell, soft insides..

The Arachnids are by far my favorite. I like their background more than the others. I suppose the book, movies, and CGI series helped imprint an idea of what "Bugs" are supposed to be all about, so all the others are just compared to them in my mind.

Visually the newer Tyranids look better than the originals but they are more style than substance just like SMs are vs. MI Powersuits. I just don't buy into the background as much. I feel Tyranids are appealing for their Aliens/Geigeresque style but with fluff created as an afterthought.

To me, Kryomeks were just better looking Tyranids than the early Tyranids but not as good as the more recent sculpts and the Arachnids.

I have lots of Tyranids and lots of SST bugs.

In my opinion;
You can't really compare thier look since they are far to different. I like the look SST bugs but I love the tyranids. However, both could use more development.

Quality of models, sorry mongoose, but GWs current Tyranids are better models, both in detail of sculpts and in ease of construction. (The brain Bug was an OMFG nightmare.)

Value for the buck, SST is a better game and the price of the SST models is better than GWs. However, the group I game with plays a lot more 40K than SST (Im the only one who was willing to build and buy the models so most of my games of SST I set up and ref, instead of play.
So that makes the value thing a bit of a tie for me.

Will I keep buying and building both my armies? YES!

In the end its really not about who's best, but how much fun you have with the game.

Ok, lets take a different tac then.

Who would win in a War, Tyranids or Arachnids . . . . . . .

Let's compare them a bit in the fluff and more in terms of how they function in a skirmish game.

Bigger Swarms? Hmm..Undecided on that. Arachnid Warriors are cheaper than MI. Termagants are cheaper than SMs, but I'd say Termagants and even Genestealers are weaker than Arachnid Warriors. I'm going by toughness to bring down by rifle fire, overall size and claw length on that decision.

Bigger Fleet? Tyranids. However SICON bombardment doesn't finish off the Bugs when they dig deep. Tyranids would also have to go in on the ground.

The Tanker family of Bugs (King, Thorny, and normal Tanker) would outclass the typical Tyranid biggies like the Carnifex, which I'd consider to be spec'd out as an Bio-Ape Marauder. I think overall the Arachnids are better in close combat. The Tyranids have a lot more shooty stuff and little guys with claws that will rip apart armored humans but not big Bugs.

Smarter? Could go either way. Both sides have Psychic Talents. I imagine Rupture would work on Hive Tyrants.

Both sides aren't damaged on natural rolls of a one..that's a tie.

Tyranids can crawl, infiltrate, and fly. Arachnids can crawl, tunnel, infiltrate and fly. Advantage-Arachnids

Plasma Bugs- AA and indirect artillery on the game table. Bigger and probably more accurate and deadlier than a biovore with spore mines. Advantage Arachnids.

My money is on the Arachnids.

You also have to factor in that what ever the Arachnids encounter, they adapt, include, and improve on.

And they do so (in MHO) much more effectively than the Tyranids ever could.

shakes head

i mean there would be no drool coming from the most of the bugs - i mean most pics of nids they are covered in bio-organic liquid bugs 9cept for the brain) seem to be pretty much drool less?(is that a word) or am i missing something?

If anyone tell me what this 'gooey' slang word means...

Tyranids and Arachnids is a simple story.
Bugs are space insects. Tyranids are space reptiles (lizardmen).

Both races have some things in common but come from a totaly different approach - just compare the Tyranid Warrior to a Warrior Bug.

I like the bugs more because they don't look like a bunch of radiation-mutated Post-Chenobyl-reptilehumans.
Tyranids still look some kind of human-grown, where a Warrior bug looks totaly alien. You don't even imagine you could talk to this thing.

For the models, I like the bugs more. They are made from a better plastic and have far more details on their skins.
Look at the average gaunt or even the new carnifex and you have plenty of smootly unscructered parts. Now try to find an unstructered skin part on a Warrior Bug - good luck, you'll need it.

Here's a pic to show you what I mean. The Warrior has about 100% more skin detail than the gaunt (who actually doesn't have any at all):

In an War... well, I'd go for the bugs.
Tyranids are intelligent, but not in a degree the bugs are. They don't have this sense of exploiting tactical advantages and their enemies weaknesses.
In addition tyranids depend on evolution - nothing to compete with genetical engineering experts.
And in the comparison of the basic fighting unit the Arachnids clearly win. A Warrior Bug Horde would tear through a Gaunt Pack with ease. Warriors are much bigger, stronger, better armoured and they don't depend on their bigger cousins to tell them what to do.

Also Bugs are much tougher. During the tyranid invasion of Macragge most of the smaller creatures died during the icy nights. Bugs wouldn't care, damn bugs lived on Pluto.

Both of them have infiltration capabilities though I think Controll Bugs and their victims are worse than genestealers and their cults.

goey = Drool. spit, gob and mouthwater. Bugs dont have it except for the brain right? if i was to model it on my warriors for example it would look out of place right?

Perhaps drool wouldn't look out of place on the Bugs if the Arachnids used Tyranid or Homer Simpson DNA* when infecting a new world.

**Brain Bug goes "Doh!!"

Oh, I think bugs are much more... 'knuffig' (don't know the english version of that word).
A screaming Warrior looks much more impressive (and much sweeter) than a screaming gaunt (may be caused by it's jaws that meassure half it's size).

Drool. Hm... I assume tyranids look more drool. Bugs are insect-shaped and insects are not known for slimy appearance or water dripping from their mandibels. It just wouldn't fit.

no i mean drool they dont have great gobs of it coming out of their mouths do they? I mean i got a bottle of water effects on standby but should i?

We'll guys once again I have to say the question is pointless, and on this board impossible to honestly debate. The aracnids have more fans here than the Tyranids. Also the reasons sited so far have been either game mechanics, which you can't compare, or fluff which has been sited rather inacuratly, especially the Tyranid side.

I think the real question is...

Would people on this board like the Tyranids if they had been created by Mongoose, and were part of the SST game and universe?

Be honest, because it looks to me that any army with the words Games Workshop associated with it suffer a big drop in popularity on this board from GW hate alone.

plus bugs produce in the trilions every day hell maybe hour, they control most of the space and can whipe out a mobile infantry colony like water going down a drain pipe. tyranids on the other hand they rely on the hunt once they get a human they take it to the hive ship or spire and the mixed flesh and organs of there prey produces tyrinid thus making only hundreds a day or hour cause if a tyrinid has like no armor except for the rough skin layer on there backs and when there charging at rifle men theyl just get mowed down bugs on the other hand have very very very good armor takes acurat shots to wound them or strategic thinking when your up against a tanker (not this is basicaly if it was real life never played a game but yes bugs would win)

look my question was not who is the coolest - or who could kill more it was about spit and wether Arachnids would have it drooling over their carapace... ok

Most insects don't drool, however, there are some insects that produce a sticky saliva like substance to catch other insects, so for select species drool away, Tyranids have a more Alien (i.e., the movie) look so drool away.
