Spacecraft Design in B5

You have to add something to the combat to make it work. The most common on this forum is an armor damage rule. We have a playtester on record here as saying something to the effect of "We told them about that. No idea why it still got left out."

Fascinating. I had thought that B5 ships are rather light on armor, but you're telling me that the armor damage rules are broken... egads, how painful.

Armor damage is really simple to apply. I don't know it off the top of my head, but a little research should turn it up in this forum. Basically without it certain ships (like raider fighters, for example) couldn't even damage a Starfury in one on one combat. Even with a crit, it'd be impossible. Even as a wing, even getting the first shot, even assuming all of them fire, hit, and stay in the wing, it's tough unless there's something like 5 or 6 raider fighters to 1 Starfury. And that's ONLY in a wing. in a dogfight, a Starfury could easily solo any number of raiders, so long as they don't have a chance to form a wing. Now, granted, Starfuries are way past raider ships in tech, but that's still kind of broken.

Armor damage allows for degradation of armor during combat, meaning that even small ships with low offense still can do a little damage now and then, if given time. (Using the raider vs. Starfury example...the Fury's going to win every time. Even one shot tends to blow a single chip fighter out of the black. But a group of raider fighters have a chance against a Starfury if there's armor damage. The first few might get blasted, but soon the armor is all gone and the Starfury is vulnerable to the last few in the formation, as opposed to the way the rules worked before.)

Note: this is using the basic V1 design. The V2 hase a bit better chance, and things are a bit more even.

I understand. If using "degrading" armor, then an inferior weapon can still chip away at a superior craft.

It does strike me as odd, if only because the tech difference between raider and fury doesn't seem all that wide (or maybe it is!). But, then again, the Starfury is a mean ship.

Seems a bit annoying to track armor damage. Although, it's just keeping tally marks; that's not so bad.

It does seem ironic that a ship can score a "critical hit" and yet the hit turns out to not be "critical" at all, but that's just me being nitpicky.

The wing rules are quite familiar, and very intuitive.

I was try to recreate the Mekton size vs size table idea for B5 before our GM ran away from the game (we just all pick up our 2nd edition book/s so think what we think about him) it look like it work, it did not stop someone put a have large laser in a fighter, but it would not be doing the same level damage as a ship size one, it also made the 3 pt ship weapons a danger’s to fighters

New question. What is the limitation on the hyperspace drives? Can they only be used a few times before requiring a recharge? The concept is to limit their use, so how does that work in a game?
