White text on black isn't good.

Indeed, a pain for printing

LBH

That was also my 1st thought...
But it looks indeed better!

When I'm testing printers at work I sometimes need to burn through a lot of toner, I'll keep a copy of this issue handy for just that time. :)

Just a quick update,

I made a few quick tweaks to S&P this morning which included:

The corporation Article is now labelled properly.

The mongoose heraldry backdrop has been removed.

A little edit to the around the world text to mention Tenra Bansho as the first fantasy rpg to be translated.

These should all be amended when you go to download it from the website.

Just a quick point on the main issues arrising:

The portrait view is a precursor to the future, there are no definates so you will have to wait and see.

The white on black might not be so practical for printing now but i would not have done it without reason, guess its just another matter of patience.

@Robin: Since I wrote the Lone Wolf article, I'll take that as a compliment ;)

I've not found time to read it properly yet, but I was just quickly scanning through for the purposes of this post. One thing that struck me is that it probably needed to be longer or a multi-part piece to allow it room for detail. I'll give you a couple of examples. In the Street of Silver bit it says, "Inside... are many interesting place to spend coin." That's fine and dandy, but what are they? Similarly, in Sundries and Stuff we have the twins and their curios, but it would have been interesting to have some example of the curios and how they obtained them. The Bath House sounds interesting, but do any interesting NPCs visit there and what's the latest gossip there?

Sorry that's a bit negative, especially given that it's based on a very casual perusal largely focused on one page, but it's that sort of detail I'm always looking for. However, it's exactly the sort of article that appeals to me.

Regards

Robin

Sorry, I'd have liked to include way more detail but that's how Mongoose wanted the article laid down. Compared to say Port Bax, which I was able to take 2 articles on. It's really for the game book series not the RPG.

It can be used for the RPG of course, with a little tinkering here and there.

Thanks for the kind words though :)

Of course: The Street of Silver does contain -

The Tangent, etc, might not be immediately apparent from the layout. That's how I originally wrote it though. If you look at the map you'll see 17 is the Street of Silver and the rest of the shops are labelled on there along it. The Merchant's Gathering there is actually made up of those shops inside.

The Tangent
Shora's
Luca's Blades
Erik Deedles
Storm's Hammer
Sundries and Stuff

I always imagine other shops outside, along the street...no room to put them all though :)

If I'm given free reign detail wise, Mongoose tend to end up with 2 part articles like Port Bax or a whole Sommerlund Guide ;) - I'm obsessed with detail.

I note, I didn't do the map.

While it does look pretty and all, despite the portrait layout, something about it just screams "Inphobia" to me (and thats not a good thing)
I think its the inverse color schemes, along with the random chatup lines and movie reviews, though you currently have far more game content than that abomination had in its entire run, and S&P would be a steal at twice the price.
Still after looking at it I have a compulsion to go scrub myself clean to get the White Wolf meomires out...

I agree with the comments about colour and orientation.

Landscape and colours would be fine so it could be read on screen.

Portrait and black on white with minimal colours would be great for printing.

Masses of colour, white text on black background and portrait format is bad IMHO.

Also, can we have bookmarks please? (though the fact that we still don't get these in the paid for PDFs means I won't hold my breath).

Also, hyperlinked table of contents page?

I'd never have thoughtof THAT!

Point is it is a completely frivolous step that should not be required.

Victory plans promised ... Victory plans duly delivered :D

Thanks Matt, Charlie et al!

[And seconding LBH's request for a high res download of the same]

I agree; I prefer a magazine that, if I must get it in PDF and can't get it at all in print, I can just print from any printer that is black-and-white-only.
