Some thoughts on CSC

I know CSC has been out for a while, but I recently got a copy so it's new to me.

I had my doubts that a gear book would be worthwhile, but I'm impressed. It has a very wide range of equipment and I think it will prove very useful. It fills a lot of gaps. For example I'm not interested in Cybernetics that much so doubt I'll get the dedicated supplement, but the fact that CSC has a dozen or so basic cybertech items in it has me covered if any of my players are into that sort of thing or if I want a few cybered up NPCs for some reason. Similarly every now and then a PC wants to take a medical doctor as a character, and CSC provides a useful range of medical equipment. Scouts will find the sensors and survival equipment handy.

My first instinct was that each of these categories of gear would be better located in dedicated supplements, but now I think I was wrong. Putting it all in one pace means that with one book you have all the basic gear for a wide variety of play situations.

The military equipment and weapons in Mercenary were a big weakness IMHO, but CSC fixes that comprehensively. I wish I'd bought this when it came out.

I have to say I like the artwork in the previews for the weapons - what sort of proportion of the gear has that with it?

Not a lot. There are a few more of those, but most of the illustrations are hand drawn sketches or profiles. It's also not clear which illustrations are for which items of kit. Not a major issue, but annoying.
