Solomoni Rim Anybody?

I agree wholeheartedly with this, but I am also convinced that Switzerland
would be just as wrong as Space Nazis / Commies are.

What we need is an original description of the Solomani as Solomani, not
an attempt to turn them into copies of anything else, whether Nazis, Com-
mies or Swiss.

Yes and no. All Traveller has done has taken snapshots from human culture/history stretched the variable components...and projected a future veneer/chrome over top. If we wanted truly alien. It would be great but I don't think it would be Traveller.

Traveller also likes to make fun of assumptions...take the Noble Aslan much like Feudal Japan but they cannot even agree to get an Emperor...so they remain feudal. Yet, they are presented as an unified race...which they are anything but. Playing one clan against the other has been the game since First Contact...but the Aslan did wise up to a certain extent and perused expansion Spinward although the richer worlds lay Trailing.

So, yes, they should not be generic Swiss with cheese and cuckoo clocks and generous amounts of chocolate and interesting timepieces...but it should dismantle the Space Nazi myth by filling in different interpretations than what has been on offer to date without violating those facts.

You should consider looking at the GURPS Traveller Solomani Rim (Rim of Fire) book to keep you going until (or if) Mongoose does anything with it. The setting info in that is worth the price of entry and usable in any ruleset, although the ship stats and character material isn't compatible because they're GURPS.

It is still available from SJG and is well worth it IMO.

I'd like to see MGT's take on Solomani Rim, so far I've liked every "rehash" of stuff that was already done in previous editions. Having said that, I'll agree that Rim of Fire would be a good purchase overall as well, with or without a MGT rehash. If one needs stats that can be used with MGT, any of the CT books that has stats for the sector would have that from about the right time period. (There was a CT "Solomani Rim" book that I'm guessing/assume is part of the reprints done by FFE..and for that matter I want to say the CT Alien Module for the Solomani has the sector done up with at least the world stats and a map as well. And any fansite map would be using stats from a suppliment like that as well. So stats that can be used for MGT fine are out there).

The big divide (or one of the big divides) in the Traveller community is that the belief that these stats should conform to real world stellar data...which the different Rim products over the years did...however, the data has since been superseded. So, should the recon use old faulty data or should it try to do new data. My guess this is one of the reasons that previous sector offerings have not had stellar data. Now, that's somewhat ok, when dealing with something imaginary like the Rift Sector or Spinward Marches (where only of the Stars are real). But, the Rim is our local neighbourhood and easily verifiable.

Then add to that a layer of Solomani politics which has been discussed in an earlier thread. As much as, one might like the notion of Space Nazis versus the Yanks in Space... Traveller has always been about more complex explanations (so called "Wheels within Wheels" theory). So certainly any treatment of the Rim would have take into account the outward appearance of a neo-Nazi state but delve a little deeper (as even the CT Alien Module does) and find that there is a different but vibrant, prosperous social order that hardly resembles the Nazi state. And, this is where the contention begins...

For me, as I stated, it would nice to see them as Swiss in Space or by extension the United Nations in Space (that was tried in GT with the Authentism Movement which left a very sour taste - partially because it was a footnote and an afterthought). Earlier, I have suggest that we look at the immediate aftermath (up to Shay's Rebellion) of the American Revolution as a model. But then we are back to Yanks in Space. So then we are left to find other models of multinational Federations/Confederations. Today's Russia? Possibly? The USSR - back to the problem of Space Nazis and the economy of the Confederation is not Centrally Planned but a vibrant free market economy - freer than the Imperium in some ways. Yugoslavia - possibly but again, the Solomani would hardly qualify as not being a failed state which other than the hiatus of postwar reconstruction, Yugoslavia was...

So, we come back to Switzerland. Many nations sharing a common identity, prosperous, democratic and a common cause.

So, true, no one Terran state would dictate the entire path of development in the aftermath of the Rim but one or two states should provide the writer with the framework in which interesting writing could take place.

If one does not want to change the "established facts" about the Soloma-
ni, one has to start with a multi-national, pseudo-democratic one party sy-
stem with a very powerful internal intelligence service and a free market
economy.
To me, this looks a lot like what could be found not that long ago in Latin
America, and it also has strong similarities with certain periods of India's
recent history, perhaps even with Iran, but not with anything from Euro-
pe's recent history.
Besides, I still think that it would be a mistake to base a description of the
Solomani on any real world society, and especially on a well known one.
The result would be in serious danger to become yet another silly space
opera caricature of a society.

Everyone knows that the Vilani are modeled after India...Castes and Computers and Specialized Cuisine...

Latin America or Iran...maybe, as I said not one but a composite. Think of Stephon's speech in Rebellion Sourcebook/Referee's companion (don't have my books handy)... when he talks of what is the Third Imperium? He cites Ancient Rome, the United States, Vilani bureaux, etc.

So, as I do agree with you Rust about not basing it on one sole polity. But, Traveller is a Space Opera albeit a Harder one than most. If some one can dig up the Stephon speech, I would be happy to work with someone to rework it as foundation document...to give the Confederation a new shape.
