That is why the range is special for missiles and allows firmpoints to engage at ranges above Close. Small craft can increase the 'throw weight' of all ships. Not as well as the missile pods a la Honor Harrington, but not a bad amount either.

36 ton or above ships with 2 firmpoints could throw missiles and be used for point defence to defend the mother ship, or double the number of missiles, but 3 10 ton craft could triple it, so smaller may be better in this case.
 
It's too obvious and clearly stated to be editorial oversight.

And if it was, it hasn't been errataed.

That means it's a house rule that has to be instituted in each campaign.

35 dT means you can have a barbette launching 5 missiles or even a torpedo, clearly superior per dT.
 
Good idea about the missile barbette! That and a ton or two of extra ammo and you have a very nasty addition to system defense.

I've been playing around with the idea of having reaction drives as well and getting the ship up close and personal to the incoming ship incredibly fast. This might be better for an energy weapon based ship, although having a missile get into attack range in a single round is a nasty threat as well.
