Signals from the Core Podcast

Terry Mixon

Emperor Mongoose
Found this and it is super cool. The fact it is in the Core sector and the first plot hook is linked to AI makes it perfect for a singularity campaign. Love it.

Can’t wait to hear what @Sigtrygg thinks of it.

Listening to it now, will give feedback as I listen...

he can't pronounce gauss...

5 years and he only knows Mongoose, oh the great Seth gets a mention, lots of web based mentions

he wants to talk about Traveller, has he even bought the FFE CT cd?

aargg, Star Wars reference - saved he mentions Firefly, computer games, B5 and Apple's Foundation, he gets my vote.

he nails the tone of core sector

core sector is unaware of the FFW brewing... the imperium isn't evil? I beg to differ

not a thousand year empire - the sylean federation ruled core sector in effect for centuries before...

he's definitely passionate about Traveller

"controlled chaos held together by tradition"

imperial trappings concentrate the closer to capital

he's selling it to me (but then I just bought all the core adventures to complement Singularity)

lived in sector full of contradictions...

psionic black sites and forgotten archive worlds...

lol, all sectors are the same volume, but I know what he means

his description of his take on it is pretty good

threats wear silk and speak in code...

noble intrigue

massive hints of Dune...

anything is possible in the core

adventure hook - the last grant, I would run this (why the assumption the players travel via their own ship, there are lots of ways to travel)

interesting NPCs - only complaint is he doesn't understand just how much psionics is banned within the Imperium - if he only has Mongoose to go by that is understandable

interesting potential plot twists

this could easily mesh with Singularity

Bottom line, I enjoyed it and will subscribe. I recommend it for what that is worth. 5 stars awarded on Spotify.

I thought you’d like it, and I even guessed at some of the caveats. I asked if he could write up the plot hook and he’ll do that this weekend. I’ll share it here when he does.

If you know him personally send my regards, I think he has done a really good job selling the core sector as an adventure setting.

And some of my comments were playing on my reputation as a curmudgeonly grumbling old grognard... but you knew that already :)

Looking forward to his next podcast (I normally use Spotify but everyone has an Apple ID these days...)

Is there a way to subscribe for notification of a new episode...

Oh and ask him to stick it on YouTube if he can...

I don't know him. Just saw his post about it on Facebook, but I did link to this thread so he could peek in if he likes.

At 47 mins I may have to take a couple of sessions to listen to it all...

Travellers in the core are operators, people with just enough influence...

etiquette and plausible deniability

bureaucrats, military support staff, nobles, retired military veterans,

behind the smile, force

scholars,

aside I am getting distinct Foundation TV series Cleon Empire from all this...

agents, information warfare

Ok rant time - there are no psionic exiles - learn the setting please - in the Imperium psions are hunted down and lobotomised or worse, psions discovered within core sector will be considered to be Zhodani agents and tortured until they admit it... that was my immediate reaction. Pure Imperial propaganda...

there are underground psionic institutes, and the rules for finding them make them much more common within the core sector, so the likelihood is that despite the psionic supressions there will be an underground psionic movement, knowing that at any moment the anti-psi division could come knocking at the door...

Is Mongoose Traveller promoting psionics within the Imperium? Are the psionic suppressions not part of the Third Imperium anymore? Are they after a nuance where they are more common?

more later.

Aside from the content, there are a lot of verbal stumbles where a sentence might have been re-recorded.

I agree about the psions. Still pretty good.
