"Shotgun!"

Imagine that you have a basic pump shotgun, a skill of 2 with it and 8 dex, and the choice of shot/ball/HE/HEAP. You are going along as tech support on a commando raid to blow up a TL5 chemical weapons depot/bunker. This is a world where armour sees occasional military use, most often by guards of places such as this, and its generally in the mesh to flak vest range.

Whilst you hope not to personally fire a shot, it could happen. What ammo do you take, and what do you preload?

Loadout HEAP. Take some birdshot.

Slug is just the basis of HE & HEAP. HE & regular Shot are ST(soft target) rounds. HEAP will own whatever you hit, if your shotgun normally does 4d6 damage then you'll ignore the first 5 points of armour and do 5d6 damage. Not much will get up if you hit with that; an average of 18 points of damage per hit.

You might want to take some birdshot (extra attack dice discard lowest & ignore dodge) in case your target is in cover or otherwise hard to hit. Regular shot/slug doesn't really seem worth it if you have access to birdshot and HEAP.

So are you taking one of these?

Then what was already suggested

Or one of these?

Then take extra magazines with the different shells.

Or one of these?

Then take extra belts of different ammo.

Or one of these?

Then load one internal magazine with shot and the other with HEAP or Slugs.

And carry extra rounds.

Suddenly I need to go shopping. :)

Actually, I'm instinctively a "single aimed shot" kind of guy. So what I really want is laser pointer, HUD link, and that kind of thing rather than sheer volume of fire. But I'll need to find a high tech world where we're not yet wanted criminals for that.

I'm not really a combat guy, hence being skilled in shotguns instead of laser/gauss weapons. I've actually been through about 10 sessions and abetted many deaths without ever firing a weapon. And I fully believe that the best weapon to take to a gunfight is somebody else who'll risk their life for you. But I figure that if I do ever have to get personally involved in a gunfight, I want to win it.

What I want to know is, do shotgun armed SWAT guys strap wide angle flashlights to their Remingtons instead of laser pointers

I suspect that most interstellar mercs and soldiers would pick up or be assigned the second or fourth shotguns, and not the first.

The third is a heavy weapon if I ever saw one.

If their department has the money, they mount both.

...I was meaning as a shotgun-version of the laser pointer ... and I wasn't being very serious

If it was me? Take ball, load ball, and nothing else.
You don't intend to fire a shot, and other people should be doing the fighting. If you do have to fight, you can't afford to discover that the one shot you get off against an opponent is stopped by decent body armour. Shot is too easy to cut the teeth of.

HE and HEAP are even more deadly, but more importantly, there is no way in hell I'm taking anything as indiscriminate as gameshot or explosive rounds - or armour piercing explosive rounds, which is just asking for catastrophic overpenetration of your target - into a freakin' chemical weapons depot.

Number 4 looks like a nice item. Compact so it doesn't get in the way. 15 shots is fine for a tech, its not as if you should be getting into extended firefights unless something has gone very wrong.

The redneck on youtube gives a good review

Mithras, if I remember correctly, the High Standard M10 bullpup shotgun was equipped with a flashlight that was focused to cover the shot pattern of the weapon at all effective ranges. The M10 was a semi-auto design that required magnum rounds to cycle the action properly (and failed at that on occasion). It wouldn't be able to accept explosive rounds.

Wow.... Who'd have thought that?!

To answer the question, SHOT, primary load.... Then your choice of reloads.

Note, you did say a raid on a chemical plant, so I would probably avoid a HE/HEAP as a sole load as you don't know what the interior environment will be like, i.e. flammables/explosive hazards. Though I might keep a 4 so shells in a pocket just in case.

Now, if you can take the KSG (number five I think) I would put shot in one magazine and slug in the other with a 4 clip of HE/HEAP in a pocket just "in case".

The KSG and the UTS 15 are basically the same in game terms

Both have 2 tube attached magazines that hold 7 rounds of 2 3/4 inch shells or 6 3 inch shells or 10 shorty shotgun shells.

The only differences other than a few oz weight and a couple of inches in length is that the KSG is a selector for which magazine left or right. The UTS 15 can be left, right or one round alternating between magazines.
