Ship serial numbers

Is there an "official" way to generate a serial number for a vessel? Or should I just type some random stuff that looks cool? :)

I'm assuming the serial number is part of the transponder. There may be places that had the ship's name and SIN (ship identification number) painted on the hull.

Most really large interstellar polities probably would like a unique identifier, so the transponder might transmit some form of universal blockchain.

What you paint on the hull, might need to be in line with local regulations, or the possibility might exist that you can have custom plates.

In the Third Imperium, there are at least two unique identifiers for ships. The tail number is assigned by the manufacturer -- this is a little like a VIN number for a car. Examples can be found in CT supplements like Lightning Class Cruisers. The Registration Number is assigned by the world the ship is registered on, and is like a license plate number.

Presumably, individual manufacturers and individual worlds can use whatever schema they like for tail numbers or registration numbers. In either case, the rule of cool should certainly apply.

I'm pretty sure local authorities would have some firm opinions if some foreign spaceship landed with pornographic art painted on it's hull, so you likely have to follow local standards in terms of identification.

A long time ago, I had the idea that SIN's are designated by the world's unique identifier, the year the hull was constructed, and the contract number for the hull itself. If a world has several shipyards, then each shipyard would have its own unique identifier and their contract numbers.

In theory, you would have unique ship hull identifiers using that kind of theory.

But, that's just me trying to deal with "Database" design. When you get right down to it, what ever method you choose will have to consider the fact that the Imperium has to have some really decent computer science programmers hard at work keeping things functional. ;)

ON that note...

;)

Have a good day.

For small craft, the US Navy uses the classification of the boat, the year it was made and the sequential number as it's made.
The associated parts list would then be keyed to a series of the boats, so if they switched parts halfway through the year, the other craft would be on a different list.

So length, type, year-order in which it was made.

I'm sure that most planetary governments would happily issue "vanity" serial numbers for a fee (small or large) just like modern-day ones do for license plates. Sure, there'll be a few things that you can't get from a given world for whatever reason (just like with vanity license plates), but you can probably get what you want done somewhere.
