I really have no idea why people complain about the lack of detail on Panzerschiffe ships. You just have to paint them right! ;) Here is the South Dakota:

We played the Guadalcanal Finale as a night-fight playtest the other day. Wrapped it up in about 2 1/2 hours, which I think is pretty good considering we were taking notes and snapping pictures as well. I'll have the battle report with pics up soon. . .

The Panzerschiffe models are 1:2400.
Very nice paint job, though; it looks like a 1:1200 scale model.

It's a 1/2400 scale model, same as GHQ.

Don't know much about Panzerschiffe, but GHQ ships have even more detail. Here's their version of South Dakota, with the Panzerschiffe below.

Yeah. . . . just kidding guys. . . :)

That's actually a 1/700 scale South Dakota that we will be using for our mega-scale game at FlatCon in a couple weeks. On the base and w/o any frame of reference it can look quite small though in a picture!

The actual model is about 9" long IIRC.

Yeah, "Not knowing much about Panzershiffe" is a recipe for mistakes.

You can see in this pic: for comparison

Maybe if you sanded down the Panzerschiffe model extensively and used GHQ parts and a lot of green stuff you could approach the GHQ level of detail.

Plus the planes sort of give the scale away. The turrets are a dead giveaway, way too fine to be of a small scale. Nice ship!

Because you were kidding, I'll beat you over the head with this-

That cannot be a model (in any scale) of the USS South Dakota, Soulmage.

For a coconut, someone tell me why?

Hmmmm . . . my ID of the ship was "Looks like a North Carolina. . . only it has 1 funnel. Must be a South Dakota.

. . . alright, did some looking online. I must not be looking at the right pics! What ship is it and why? :D

A) Because it looks nothing like a South Dakota

B) Because it's actually the Yamato?

Be more specific. I'm not giving this to you, heh. You've got to earn it. :P

Let's say it was the way that you phrased your "trick" on us that got me started on this little game-

Here is the South Dakota

Now you are trying to pull legs and are not helping things along.

That is the first South Dakota that was cancelled by the Washington Naval Treaty. It's not what I'm talking about here, but nice try. :)

Wrong number and arrangement of secondaries :)

SoDak only had 4 5" turrets on each side. And her conning tower was different. Both differences from the remaining ships of her class due to her having flag features.

DM rushes in at the last minute and steals the coconut, heh. :D

Yuppers, indeed the SoDak was different from her three sisters. Fitted out as a flagship, they added a level to the conning tower. When this raised the center of gravity/stability, they dropped a twin 5" mount from port and starboard. To compensate partially for the loss in AA coverage, the bare spots were covered with a quad AA mount each.

The irony in this is that she never made use of the fleet flag area. Adm. Lee loved his USS Washington and flew his flag there as Commander Battleships, Pacific Fleet. Halsey used the more spacious New Jersey (wouldn't you?) as his flag. This might have influenced Halsey btw to take his battleships with the carriers at the Battle off Samar. That, and his Annapolis training to not break up his forces. In a curious way, while I blame Halsey for not placing TF 34 in the rear guard position at Samar, it most likely saved hundreds/thosands of lives on both sides, putting the monkey on the back of poor Taffy 3. But I digress.

DM, how would you like your coconut? :D

Here are two examples. Way back in the mists of time when I bought these, Superior never had a special model of the SoDak. I did the alteration of the secondaries, but didn't think it was worth adding a tiny amount of height to the conning tower.

USS South Dakota is in the foreground, with USS Alabama alongside. The Alabama is closing to transfer the mail over to the SoDak, along with DM's coconut.

Interesting photo - thanks.
The Panzerschiffe model isn't any more detailed than the 1:3000 models - just bigger, so the lack of detail is more apparent.
I'll stick with Skytrex, I think :-)

Umm, you owe me $324.36 for the fleet of ships I just ordered based upon this being an actual 1/3000 scale model.

j/k myself, as I didn't have the money to order a new fleet. However, I do believe Posts like the OP could have caused someone to do so, which would have made this a poor joke indeed if someone had put money down on ships based upon claims of this being "Brand X" of 1/3000 scale ships.

Still, it's a very nice ship and a great paintjob. 8)

I would say it's less detailed and bigger than the 1/3000.
