Ship Insurance

But any insurance policy is going to have restrictions on it. Okay, well, there are a few specific exceptions, but in this instance I don't think they'd come into play.

And your referee could happily tie up the PC's for years in court too...

It all depends. If the gov issued pirate warnings for specific systems and you went there and were attacked, it may not be covered if the Ins policy forbids travel to systems under a "pirate warning". It all depends on the policy...

Agreed. Hence I suggested researching today's shipping insurance issues when moving in the Indian ocean area. Travelling to known pirate-infested systems may void your insurance, or at the very least your premiums would be increased. But shippers have gone into high-threat zones since shipping began as long as there was enough profit in it to justify expenses and risk.

And, regarding the discussion on fuel costs, "Shipping analysts said that shipowners are passing the bulk of these increased costs [fuel] to the shipliner companies, by charging them higher freight rates. "

The owners pass on the insurance costs also. Ultimately, the consumer pays...

SOmething that came to mind going through this was the Discworld idea of In Sewerance.

You jump into a system to be hailed by radio inviting you to take out pirate attack avoidance insusrance. Duration a week and limited to this system only. Longer durations and multi system packages available please see the insurance rep on world.

Failure to pay means you meet a big, well armed, black painted ship with a skull and crossbones on the front hull on the way out.

As long as the system goverment gets its cut its probably going to be more efective as an income long term than actualy being pirates

Still the 3I will probably not like it, only one power round here allowed to demand taxes in return for the right to fly these systems without getting shot

I suspect the neighbouring systems and others interested in trade
with the system would also soon begin to think about a visit of war-
ships to help the system to deal with that terrible pirate problem ...

"No need to thank us, that is what neighbours are there for after
all, and sorry for that collateral damage mistake which eliminated
most of your system fleet."
