BoardGameGeek has a Share-a-Game initiative, which encourages people to create topics and threads discussing games that might be less well-known to the community. I volunteered to share what (little) I know about MgT, and I was recently asked to do so. If you're interested, please check out the thread: http://boardgamegeek.com/article/9387979

You mentioned characters dying in Traveller during chargen. The massively printed Second Edition of Book 1 included an optional rule on page 10 allowing a character to leave the service with a healed injury instead of dying. That optional rule was published over 30 years ago.

I've only got MgT books. Is that optional rule present in Mg's Core Rule Book?

Ah, interesting. And now that's the rule, rather than the option. It's similar to the evolution of character generation in D&D. First it was straight rolls, which many people house-ruled. Then it was straight rolls, but with point-buy listed as an official option, and all but officially endorsed as the standard. Then it became the standard.

Mongoose reversed it and the default is injury, but there is an optional iron man rule to go back to the old way.

Injury is one outcome for every class, usually the 2 (and sometimes also the 3) result on the Mishaps table. Most other Mishaps don't involve injury of any kind.

Yes it's not the only option, but mustering out due to a mishap rather then dying as default is flipped around from the original.

I got rid of my MegaTraveller long ago. I don't remember its chargen rules.
