Actually that's a full hanger for the air/raft so not such a tight squeeze. Used the updated air/raft from Civilian Vehicles which only comes to .8 dtons. Same size airlock as the original ship and had the space there so went ahead and used it.

I recall the airlock in the first one being large so that it has a good place to hang vacc suits and such; sort of a ship's locker type arrangement. I guess a large airlock is more useful to a scout than to a merchant. (Though some merchant ships have cargo airlock of course.)

Yup, be used for that. Didn't actually put in a ship's locker, figured between the airlock and the cargo area didn't really need a separate area.
