Screwing Up a Garden World

at a certain season, a fungus blooms (native live is immune) that spreads spores around the planet (on the planets equivalent of the jet stream) tainting the atmosphere for half the year....On non-native species (human, etc all) these spores have a narcotic efrfect.

yes, a planet stoned off it's collective butts on 'magic mushrooms', but before you realize your stoned..you are.

All the ideas above are good. For something really nasty you might want to take a look at Harry Harrison's Deathworld series. An extremely hostile, psionically sensitive ecology with touchy impulsive citizens makes for a tough place to visit.

Red Zone. Red Zone! Only available to the Navy on 'special shore leave'!!!

Great idea, BTW! A bit like that old adage about the Nile, 'taste the waters and you are destined to return', but all the guides tell you: 'taste the waters, you may never leave...'. Phlume is one of those places you dare not visit - you may like it so much you cannot leave.

required to wear a respirator, but why would one want to?

it would have to be a gradual effect, intensity increasing as the 'season' peaks, then decreasing as the season wanes...can you say 'gap in memory'?

If you went this way it would be a red planet for sure; maybe a yellow if it isn't extreme. Although pleasant, such a planet would be dangerous, if the players got 'distracted' and spent a prolonged period on a such a planet, they would rack up quite the debt in missed mortgage payments and random weeks of training in mundane skills, like trade farming or Art.
