Scipio Sends...Eats a Little Humble Pie

Hi All:

As some of you may know, my stand on pre-paints has been :x :x :x :x :x :x :x

Well, when I started coming back to these boards, I decided that I was going to take a wait and see attitude, and before I commented on any of the pre-paints, I would have them in hand.

I ordered a squad of Marines, and they have arrived. I have spent the better part of two days looking at them and I can now say:

They're not that bad. Not great, but not horrible either. Far better than I was expecting.

CERTAINLY NOT better than "90% of the gamers out there can do" (perhaps that comment was aimed at the 11-14 yr crowd?), but I wouldn't feel bad about putting these guys on a table after some touch-ups and some fixes on the bases (a number of figs had the sand rubbed off the bases by the securing strap which exposed the white primer underneath).

Honestly, as pre-paints go, I'd give them a passing grade. I don't think they're nearly as good as AT-43, but that 's my opinion...

Will these figs make me buy the rules? Probably not. I've never been a fan of the "near future" setting anyway: I'd much rather see the here and now...but again, that's MY opinion.

If MGP can improve the quality of pre-paints for SST, then I just might have to rethink my current stance. Having seen the Marines, I think they're off to a decent start.

Regards.

P.S. YELLS to Ian!!!! The publisher I'm working with now asked me Monday about my experience with MGP, and Ian, you got RAVE reviews from me!!! For what that's worth...

Let me be the first to serve you another slice. 11-14 year olds have way more time then the average working adult. These are miles above the collectable crap I have invested in, not to mention the 100's more of dollars and more in the stuff I have yet to start my second job as someone elses factory mini painter to enjoy a hobby. I want to play not work!!!(I already do that 10hrs a day)
When you go to Mcdonalds - you go back in the back and make your own sandwhich a master piece or just buy the value meal and move on?
Thanks for the review.
ps where did ya get the USMC in the US? Harder to find then a democrat in a War Zone?

Those are better odds than any of the Republican leaders being found in Vietnam.....

Anyway, It's easy to find them if you know where to look. I know there's two tanks sitting at Eagle and Empire....

I have my Marines coming on Friday so they are around. I'll let you know what I think then.

Oh and for what it's worth, if given a choice I would always opt to make a masterpeice instead of letting some McDonalds worker give me food poisoning 'cause he's to lazy to do it right!

Hey Scipio, if you are cutting the humble pie, I'll have a piece as well . I have been critical, but that was based upon the pics of the first wave (which were horrible). I put my money where my forum-talk was by ordering the full range over a month ago. I can say that I have seen the miniatures, but that is only because I got some this morning. Now I finally have some miniatures that I can place into photo shoots of my urban board that I am building up. I'll still say that the Corgi M1A1 die-cast tanks are better overall, but I'll be sure to only use MGP products in any articles that I submit out of professional courtesy. I will be using all of Mongoose Publishing's products to play the game (yes, I plan to do more with my urban board than just stand back and look at it ).

Just to show a peek, here is a USMC infantry squad I freed from the box only this morning. I also am showing several new items that I just picked up from Pegasus, and how timely they are, too! Pre-painted rock walls and sandbag walls and sandbag corners that should work nicely with the game system. :D :D

Yes, that is a LEGO brick structure... wanna make something out of it? Well? If you do, you can just go and find your OWN set of bricks, so there!

the figs as shipped are certainly not up to the quality of the preview pics, but Mongoose are working on improving them wave by wave - I'm readily anticipating the wave 2 stuff next month because it was the previews of them that sold me on the game in the first place.

BuShips, nice pic. Never thought of Legos, doesnt look bad either. How about the Lego road sections? Those could be made to work with alittle bit of a mod made to them I bet. Going to have to look into that. Once again great idea.

LEGO!!! The word is Lego in the plural!!!! AHHHHHHHHHH!!!! There is no soch thing as legos!

Just a little pet peeve of mine ;)

ps. yes Lego makes very handy makeshift terrain, its not all that realistic Ill grant you (unless you happen to be recreating the invasion of Legoland....) but still beats a pile of books or DVDs for a makeshift building :P

Same here, although it was this that sold it to me:

Now if the final ones are like this then at that price then I'll be happy to buy 1-2 armies worth. So we'll just have to wait and see.

Yeah, the wave 3 stuff looks similarly awesome, I only hope they can keep up the quality of the prototype pics

That IS a wave 3 pic btw just to be nitpciky :P Marine force recon I believe. And yes they look awsome. I just hope they final products are that good. Especially the SAS as I intend to buy at least 2 boxes of them :D (I would in fact buy more but theyre a special forces unit and I dont really want them making up TOO much of my army :P)

I said it was a wave 3 pic in my post! :P It was the original pics of the wave 2 stuff (no longer on the site :() that got me sold on the game though.

Actually, the 'pet peeve' of the LEGO Group company's trademark lawyers is to use the term in any variation that does not use the term as an adjective. They are very picky about it being used as a noun. Also, as careful and respectful as I have tried to be, even I slipped above and did not add the (R) after the "adjective" form that I used (adding the word 'brick', and LEGO therefore becoming the noun  ). Although it probably is not necessary, I capitalise it to in an attempt to not get into the habit of using it as a casual word, which is the nightmare that the LEGO Group doesn't want to see because they then lose their rights to trademark. I edited the post above before I read the rest of this only to correct a misspelled word (timely), but I won't edit it further. I will attempt to continue to use the product name as an adjective but will redouble my own efforts to place the (R) there as well. Interesting stuff (really, it's boring but it is necessary out of respect, heh).

...and Dorb, yes, I have indeed considered using the road sections (and hiding the "pips" from sight), but my current urban board sections were scratch-made.
