SciAmer article - Alone in a Crowded Galaxy

It's always nice to find real science articles that one can potentially use to either generate an adventure or fill things in behind the scene. One of the things that I'm getting from this article is the concept of backwaters. Looking at the Traveller map one would think there is nothing left to explore. But even within the bounds of the Imperium are going to be systems that have had little, if any exploration done other than basic stellar cartography (6 planets - check!) and some basic analysis (planet 3 has a UPP of ... - check!). And then the explorers are on there way. Truly understanding a planets weather can take many years of observations, and exploring a system can take a lifetime or more.

How many players adventure in the built-up areas vs. the unexplored nooks and crannies?
