Schizo-Tech in Traveller

Ever since I first picked up a copy of "Twilight 2000" I always wanted to try a Earth today meets some more advanced race kind of cross over. If it were a semi-peaceful encounter with say a first contact with a race in a long standing cold war with one or more other races, the initial race making contact might be more interested in trading partners, etc than conquest (maybe). ...

They might end up hiring humans as mercenaries, much as us Brits hired native regiments in India and in fact still raise a regiment of Gurkhas from Nepal.

I'm sure that idea's been used in an SF novel or two before.

Especially since you can have the actually biology and psychology differences make humans suited for the job.

In the Tilting/Upsetting/Striking the Balance series, I could see the Race making use of human mercs if they'd won - we're physically bigger, more gifted at improvising, and capable of much stronger - even suicidal - loyalty than the smaller, more methodical members of the Race.

The idea's been around long enough - the Romans did much the same thing; the core of the legions were Romans, or Roman Citizens, or people wanting to become Roman Citizens, whilst Foederati or Auxillia were recruited to do whatever they do best - such as slingers or light cavalry or whatever.

I'm in the process of designing a 1930's tank with a TL 11 fusion power plant (using the Striker rules because I'm unhappy with Mongoose's vehicle design system) for an adventure. Judging from the preliminary power/weight calculations, anybody who can survive driving this thing will be in for quite a ride until TL 4/5 transmission and suspension blow up.
