yes I've seen that work as well; one or two trees on a cloth outline represent a stand of woods. Same principle could easily apply to asteroids.

I was going to use a picture of a nebula and then put modeled asteroids on it. I figure I could use the number of "rocks" on the terrain piece to indicate its density.
