Scale in the Young Kingdoms

Big Orc

Mongoose
Am I being stupid? I cannot find any distances in Elric of Melnibone, either in the Mongoose material or in any of Moorcocks works. I would like to know, for example, how far is from Ilmar to Karlaak.

did they have any encounters along the way in the stories?
How well traveled was the road?

in general the distance is only important if the story needs it to be

There are sailing times, in days, in the Elric 1st Ed Companion. Also, in Cities of the Young Kingdoms you can ascertain the following distances from the opening chapter.
Alorasaz is 700 km from Raschil and Raschil is 900 km from Ryfel.
Alorasaz to Ryfel takes 45 days mounted or 90 days on foot.
Raschil to Ryfel takes 23 days mounted or 45 days on foot.
It is 15 days by ship from Raschil to Ryfel.

Hope that gives you something to work with. :)

Thanks for the info everyone, that has been a great help. With the times and distances tarkhan bey has supplied I can get my ruler out and with a few calculatons can work out everything I need.

Aha found a map online on Loz's site.

Actually, its not my site; its Akrasia's... :D

The scale on that bottom map on Akrasia's site suggests the distances are about a third of those figs coming out of Cities of the YK. On the bigger scale the map is really big for a very connected world. I guess demons and elementals shorten the impact of those distances in practice, like modern technology.

Oh that's a bit confusing.
I have some other older books as well showing distances like on a grid between cities. I will check that tonight.

Only definate reference on this topic that I can recollect from Moorcock's work was in Kings in Darkness. Moonglum noted that it was just over a day's ride to Bakshaan from the point where he and Elric had just swam their horses across the River Valkark. The couple had been chased by the beggars of Nadsokor in a direction which took them to the borders of Org and near the margin of the Forest of Troos. That said, different maps attached to novels and RPG material have not been consistent with locating Bakshaan, which is sometimes a coastal city and sometimes shown as inland !

Strangely, Ryfel is sometimes inland, other times on the East coast about halfway down and other times right on the border with Argimiliar.

I think the chaos lords are having a bit of fun with us!
