Not new to the new version. They where around in Book 6: Scoundrel.
I was thinking about the crew on our old work boats. The skipper was helmsman, navigator and radio operator all in one. If push came to shove one person could handle the ship but someone was always around to tend the engines. Seems no one wants to spend money on having an extra body on board just to handle the electronics etc... I wouldn't want to run a ship for any extended period with just two men aboard. the work load would wear on them after a while.
Book6 is one of the ones I do not have... one of these days I'll flesh out my collection properly.
