S&P47 ACTA Review

Right Hand of God said:
ACTA has always sold itself as a fleet game rather than a fighter cobat game, fighters and how to deal with them have caused problems in every version and supplement issued so far. Which is a pain because limiting them to those carried by ships or in carriers could limit that if each race had the capacity to take carriers

Do we want to play BABYLON 5 space combat game or generic scifi space combat game?

and canonical background stating they don't.

Not every weapon of every ship got used in the show anyway...So hardly conclusive.

obviously they couldn't use the weapon as they didn't have it!

and at the end of the day, it's all made up, so none of it is real, so what does it actually matter, apart of course from the fact you have to argue about everything and can never be wrong.

So obviously Brakiri ships have none of those weapons. And G'Quan has no rear weapons. And did we see Warlock fire anything but missiles? Guess it's missile boat then...Or whatabout Nova? Did it fire ever?

Fact: Centauri's have lasers in canonical fluff. It might not be their main weapons but they have them.

Seems you don't want to play BABYLON 5 space combat game but just some generic space combat game with no connection to anything. Just numbers.

The canonical evidence that the Centauri don't have beam weapons is not "they never seen using any". It is an episode, can't remember which, where Dr. Franklin is an expert witness in a court trial. He submits evidence that is it well known fact that the Centauri don't use beam weapons.

What is your evidence that they do have beams?

ok, as stated repeatedly by myself and others, the centauri DO NOT use cutting weapons, this is from on screen testimonials in court and even G'Kar stands up and states it, which is protecting the centauri in it's way.
and a laser most certainly is a cutting weapon, it has nothing at all to do with what is seen.

of course if you choose to take a third party book over what JMS himself had written, then so be it.

I guess I´m out of the old "Centauribeamsyesno" argument, having said what I had to say.....

Something else about 2nd ed. though: is Mongoose now going to change their flying stands? I think I remember having read that they´re going for a "ball and socket" approach, rather than the "break and hate" ones currently in use, but there was nothing in the preview, so I´m not quite sure about that.

Matt mentioned it a month or so back, would be nice to see..

they are battle level now though.

Well given the size of the miniature, it's no surprise, and it's kinda cool to have something else in the battle level then the primus. If i remember correctly the balvarix doesn't exist anymore.

So i'm all for it :)

I think i'm gonna like this 2nd edition :D

Don't forget the Liati - I mean really don't - the Centauri have an interesting selection of Battle choices now..............all very different. :D

it also a question of which B5 combat game you are refering to:

Super Canon - guessing about 20 ships - about two from each race except EA. Not for me
AOG Canon - better change lots of stuff...............again
Mongoose Canon - also need changing to fit in with their own RPG stuff - cos it contradicts alot of ACTA stuff - especially now.........
A mixture of all of these - which we have in 2nd Ed.

And re fighters - very very important in the show - which is your overriding concern is it not? do missions on their own and everything? The only problems I have had with fighters are:

Vorlon ones are rubbish - sorted in 2nd Ed
Shadow ones are rubbish - oh well never mind
AF guns didn't shoot them before they attacked - sorted in 2nd Ed

have fun
:)

build one, just remember space ships shold not look like a penis'. (unless in some cheesy sci fi porn film, then the more phalic the better, perhaps on "boobylon 5")
