S&P47 ACTA Review

lol you should have seen the 5pt battle game we tested 116 fighters and 54 breaching pods. that was fun. oh and BTW the fighters didnt do a huge amount to the EA fleets as the EA just intensified defensive fire. what did the damage was the Gaim assault ship (but its been toned down and fixed since then).

Mmmm yes, if that's the one we fought Steve, then yes, I remember that particular beating! I still have the bruises!

As regards the GEG, it is worth remembering that GEG applies to each weapon system fired, not total damage inflicted by all attacks.
So for the Gaim, they really can't hurt most Drahk at all, unless you have magic crit dice!

The example I can use is a 4AD photon bomb (3 sets of these on many Gaim ships, but their results are independent of each other). With average dice rolls, only 2 of the AD will hit most of the time. 1 gets GEG'd.
You now have a 1 in 6 chance to actually hurt the Drahk ship at all.
That's a pretty low chance!

Err hang on. You said 2 hits, 1 gets GEG'd. The other does 1 damage/1 crew. Where does the 1 in 6 come from?

who knows, although its a 1 ni 6 chance of no damage. but this only applies to raiders. the rest of the drakh ships have more GEG.
perhaps he was on about fighters, although they are precise so its 1/3 after hits.

Ok, hang on, I had a beer at lunch, plus I've been checked spreadsheets all afternoon! My brain died about 2 hours ago!
Yes, the 1 point of damage will get through, but you'd need about a dozen more to actually make a difference.
The 1 in 6 was the crit chance on the GEG'd hit.

I am a bit worried about comments about typos and examples not being clear, shouldn't all this have been laid to rest by now? Copies go on sale at the open day don't they?

Yes but since Mongoose print the books now, they can make corrections right up to 10 minutes before printing ;)

Ha ha ha ha ha that would be really funny if their wasn't such a ring of truth to it.

I hope this works, I am fairly cynical about MGP and the last year's performance, but I love this game and am really looking forward to it being re-invigorated after the dismal and depressing Armageddon fiasco. What I have heard is encouraging from a game play aspect but new books full of typos would be craptastic

There is actually a proofreading compny lited in the credits. So if it is released full of typos and mistakes, we can at least direct our frustration to them (and presumably MGP can get their money back!)

well that's a step in the right direction, now I presume we won't have to endure feeble attempts to explain that the Drakh crusier was really meant to have an AF weapon in it's rear arc

Off topic for the recent discussion on this thread but, in taking away the centauri's beams I just hope they didnt take away all their beam weapons because I remember one episode, where a Centauri and a Narn ship (looked pretty close to the same type of ship if I recall correctly) duked it out in front of Babylon 5 during the early episodes of the Centauri Narn war.

Edit: Oh and one other thing I'm worried about is EA having its best guns moved from its front to its broadsides, how canon is that? Though I suspect it will be to late for any changes.

Dont worry not all the beams are gone - just got rid of the bad boys like Tertius and Prefect (which I doubt anyone objects to!?)and re arranged the rest.

Anyway with new Maximus ( :D ), Liati, Balvarian, Kutai, Demos and Vorchan the Lion of The Galaxy will be most content!

have fun - 2nd Ed - can't wait!

In that episode, only the Narn ship fires a beam weapon. The Centauri Primus only fires pulse weapons, while the Narn G'Quan fires a beam and pulse weapons.

As the Shadows would say "What do you Want?"

cos it depends what are looking for - from what i know it is a very nice update of 1st edition - lots of cool stuff, ideas, ships etc.

not sure about the typos (I dont really care unless they effect the actual stats) and I know the playtesters spent one hell of a lot of time on it - I think Greg said 4000 emails alone...............

There will be problems - cos there always is - and I am really hoping it is actually ready on Saturday cos I want it now actually :D However I also hope that last few stages are not rushed!

have fun

A proofreading company? good idea! but will they be able to spot errors like a pulse weapon that is actualy a plasma weapon?
Either way, my offer still stands, one slightly used soul...
