RQ Gm's Handbook - Preview

It's a smashing book, despite my copy having a warped cover! I highly reconmend it. I loved the rules about getting drunk. I think a little humour injected into the book there by it's author. Alchemey is rather good, and the stuff on guilds is pretty useful too. Plus, there are rules for summoning demons and elementals.

I can't claim any credit for that. The rules are Carl Warmsley's. He did such a good job for his S&P article last year that I felt it worth including it in the GMs' Handbook - so the kudos is all his!

After reading The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch and its sequel Red Seas Under Red Skies I am now taking alchemy (in RPGs) far, far more seriously than I ever did before.
Guilds. Oh, so important and so useful.
Drink. Not interested. Give them a penalty to all actions – but perhaps lie and tell them they are getting a bonus to reflect the real thing.
All in all a very useful sounding book, one I will keep an eye out for. In fact I should do better and telephone Replay in Bangor and get them to order a copy for me.

Just got mine at the FLGS. If New Mexico has it, the rest of the US has no excuse....

Book looks great, btw; drinking and alchohol rules, criticals and fumbles, alchemy, summoning magic, campaign styles, civilizations and settlements, aging rules, character down time, new advanced skills, some interesting (optional?) revisions on persistence, resilience, and combat stuff...that I like, such as how a defender should declare his defense choice, if any, before the attack is actually rolled.

Great book.....still seems to have a couple minor print/bind problems, (in fact I refrained from Spycraft because the binding looked too much like Cthulhutech's...plus I am remorseful that my RQ Deluxe is already falling apart) but good enough.

OOOOOH. Te book is here, finally! Amazing, perfect. Great book, great new rules for combat...

...And new doubts: wich combat fumble table is correct? The one from RQ deluxe, or this one? 18, 19 and 20 results are interchanged. :)
And, are the new wound results for creatures with a resilience above 100?

Is a character with a Major Wound helpless?

Err, yes!

If I remember right, those new wound rules may be the ones I did with Loz. If so, then a Major wound is supposed to be a show-stopper. You are immediately incapacitated no matter what your Resilience is, and cannot continue fighting due to shock, horror or pain. The best you can do is crawl off slowly, beg for mercy, or spit in your enemy's eye.

They were written to solve the 'Enemies never die till you grate them into mincemeat' problem. The major wound stops the fight. The moral dilemma of what to do with a helpless foe is up to the GM or players to figure out for themselves.

As for the Fumble tables, they might be those I did with Loz too. If so, the ones in the GM's Guide are the originals. Those in the Players Update were modified by Mongoose. Choose your poison! :D

If Loz didn't use my contributions then ignore everything I just said! You can probably check for similarity with my Opposed Roll Combat Rules on the MRQ Wiki.

The wound rules are the ones Pete helped develop.

Dunno what's happened with the Fumble table though; I haven't actually got a copy of the GMs Book yet to compare with Deluxe!

The fumble tables are in the book, along with the updated Dodge and Parry matrix tables.

Yep, I know they're in there, but I can't comment on the transposition of the entries because I don't have the final print version to compare with the Deluxe book (which I do have).

:D

The original submitted table was
17-18 Hit Ally
19 Unlucky
20 Doomed

and the modifications made by Mongoose for the Players Update were
17 Hit Ally
18 Unlucky
19 Break Weapon
20 Hit Self

I'm not sure why they were changed, since the Natural Weapon Fumbles and Ranged Weapon Fumble tables were left intact. So if the table in the GM's Guide matches the first list, then you got the original.

But it doesn't really matter. Just use the version you like best! :D

18 Break Weapon
19 Hit self
20 Unlucky

Nobody has agree upon the table :)
Break weapon result says "roll three times". It refeers three times on the table, or three times damage to the weapon?

I knew I made a wise decison not buying legendary heres when it first came out - when I went into my FLGS on Friday it was bundled with the GM's guide at £15 for the pair - the only thing that originally struck me of much interest in LH was the mass combat rules, when I get chance to read it I'll see if that was true - but I can't complain at the price!

I have only flicked through the GM's guide as I had a busy weekend, but it looks pretty good. (It also looks for the most part like the sort of thing that ought to have been in the core rulebook all along...)

One thing that was particularly and immediately noticable, however, without even opening the books was which one was printed in the UK and which one was printed in China

Do tell.....!

What were the telling features? I must know! Right now, tragically, the main difference between pre-internal-press-Mongoose books for me and post-internal-press-books is that the older stuff doesn't fly apart if you sneeze too hard.

That said, Matthew did touch base with me about to do to get the ball rolling on a replacement. Yay!

:P
