Robot Question

-Daniel-

Emperor Mongoose
Ok, I was going to add a robot into my next game and so went to the robot section. It clearly says some of the robots can be programed with additional skills. But for some reason I can't find where it gives how many skills a robot can have and the cost to have them programmed. I figure I must be overlooking something as it clearly also says everything I would need to create my own robots is in that chapter.

So please help me, what am I missing? :(

You are not missing anything.

There is no system to build robots or robot skill sets. The best we have is the Utility Droid that can have any professional skill.

That is too bad. To quote pg 70 "This chapter introduces a wide range of robots to Traveller and provides referees with the necessary tools to create their own." Bold added by me.

Clearly Mongoose must have meant to do so, but elected to not include the robot rules in this chapter. Sad when that happens. :(

There is always other editions.

I have used LBB8, from what I can remember it works and you can build anything you want, but you will get very skilled robots that are rather cheap. You will soon find that there is no need for humans in space... I stopped using it.

Yes, I like the idea of robots more like Huey, Dewey and Louie rather than like Data, Sonny, or Ash.

I remember trying to build a robot with LBB8 ages ago and found that the rules were broken there too (missing some important stuff, IIRC).

I could build one using the 1e MgT Robot Book. But I figured I would at least try to use 2e but turns out that is not to be.

If you have CSC, treat robots in the same way as animals for building your own - you can even look at mixing and matching traits between the two!

I will look at that, I like the idea of adding animal traits to robots. One question that didn't seem to be an issue with animals but I could see being an issue with robots is the skills both which skills and how many a robot can have. I would imagine that for short term I could just make a call as the GM, but it would be nice to have a cost to add skills or levels to add to the cost of a robot.

Anyway, thanks for responding.

I was gonna suggest something similar, a "just do it!" Kind of solution, but I didn't think to include the animal traits, good suggestion!
A "just do it" solution works in the short term, but I do think having some kind of guidelines for things like impact of skill levels/numbers to cost of the robot is not unreasonable of a request. The chapter did say it contained the tools a GM needs to create their own robots afterall.

That is a topic for another thread. Which was posted.

Glad you did, I think that is a wonderful topic for it's own thread. :D

The Robots book by 13mann is one of the better books, whatever edition.

Interesting, I will need to go check it out.

Thank You

I went and took dragoner up on his suggestion. I picked up the Robots book by 13mann. Very interesting read. It has quite a lot more than just robots in it by the way. Computers, Robots, Cybernetics, and other connected things. Lots of options and ideas. I am still absorbing the book, but if someone were interested in the subject I am sure this product would be of interest to them. Glad I bought it. :D

Thanks dragoner.

I would like to make a suggestion: At some point it would be nice to get a mechanic/engineer robot that isn't R2-D2. The one in the Catalog is so clearly R2-D2 they even gave it Deception1 skill. I was looking for one that really helped maintain the ship not replace the pilot and act as a trash can sized spy.

Yes, I can make my own using old editions or the 13mann book, but it still might be nice for Mongoose to add one into their mix. :D
